Does anyone else here not care for material possessions? I know individuals and have heard many stories from other healthcare providers about how one can tell once a resident is finished because they go out and purchase very expensive cars, etc... I personally despise material possessions except for my tent, backpack, sleeping bag, kayak and hiking boots. Now of course these are material possessions, but they actually have purpose. In addition, in total they cost less than $2000 and need to be replaced very infrequently. Once I graduate my goal is to work as hard as I can, make as much money as I possibly can and invest. The only thing I care about is that I have a solid financial future, that's it. Having money invested in land, stocks and saving brings more comfort than any material possession ever will. Does anyone else have feels along these lines? What are the repercussions of selecting a schools based on tuition alone. I assume no matter where I attend, so long as I score well on the USMLE and have good grades that I will be able to land a residency in surgery.

You definintely have the right idea - invest, invest, invest, invest, invest. You'll be much happier knowing you can pay for your kids college education and let them graduate debt free than having fancy designer tags in your clothing.

On the children issue, I don't believe it would be advantageous to have them. The reason, I will never be able to spend time with them. With four years of school, five years of residency and possibly 2-3 years fellowship, it is just not possible. Besides, they take away from my travel and work time. Work is an obsession.

i want kids when i get married.

From what I hear it's getting easier and easier to match surgery cause fewer and fewer people are picking it as their first choice. I remember reading in NYTimes a few months back that there may be a deficiet soon cause the top people are all going dermotology or some of the other specialties with controllable hours and high pay. It would suggest that you wouldn't have to do exceptionally well as long as you work hard and have a good attitude. In fact, in the article I think they said that last year some surgery residencies stayed vacant.

My dad is a CPA and he always tells me that doctors don't know anything about money. YOu say invest, be careful, doctors have money and people will go after you and try and take it from you.
