  1. Medical Student
Hi all !
I am currently a med student in Europe but strongly interested in getting a residency in USA. Just to keep in mind approximately to which states I should, or not, apply I have a question.

Let's say at the beginning most residents are paid 40 000 per year, in a few states I 've been told that this would be more than enough, but in other states like New York this is not enough.
I am thinking of Boston and California, (cities like San Diego, San Francisco, L.A.), would this amount of money be enough for a living there? Any other expensive and or cheaper states in mind?! 🙂

those places you name are all really expensive, and also would be difficult places for a foreign-trained physician to get a residency. I do think you can live on the intern salary, especially if you don't have to pay monthly student loan payments (most US students have to because they borrow money from the bank to go to medical school). You can expect to not have much money left at the end of the month, though. You might need to have a roommate, and you'll be renting an apartment (not a house) in those cities. My friend is looking at 1 bedroom apartments in LA and they are $1300-1600/month for a small 1 bedroom.

Oh I understand, thanks for the info. I know I may sound naive now but I'm trying to get an idea of how things are. Are there any states you 'd suggest for an IMG then with average prices and good unies? I'm mostly looking for cardio, although I'm on 2nd year yet..
