Hi All! I recently accepted my offer to RVC and was hoping to acquire some financing information from current vet students. I’ve been reading up in PLUS loans and can’t find anywhere that mentions a maximum amount that can be taken. Since the COA can vary significantly between locations, does this means that I am guaranteed to receive whatever amount I declare on the Loan declaration? My fiancé and I will be moving to London with our cats ( a huge expense). After running some of the numbers, I’m thinking I will need to request around $30-40k in addition to basic tuition costs (the first year). Is this unheard of? Has anyone else had to do this? Are there other options for funding?
Any help or info is greatly appreciated!

The school develops a suggested maximum cost for everything tuition, supplies, travel, living, etc. You can request up to that maximum amount. If you need more, you'll need to either explain why to the financial aid department and they can increase that number but this is painfully difficult. Or you can look into private loans.

You probably won't get $30-40k more, you might, it'll be close. But that's what you'll need to use to pay rent/utilities/food while there. If you need that money for moving, you won't get it. You don't get your first loan disbursement until classes start and you're already in London.

I'm wondering if any Canadians attending out of country schools have info on funding.

As far as I can tell I can only get government loans to cover a third of tuition...

For RVC, have a good look at their website where it explains financial aid for US students (How to Apply (Steps) - How to Apply - US Financial Aid - USA Students - Funding Options - Fees and Funding - Study - Royal Veterinary College, RVC)

Pay particular attention to "Step 4" and download the interactive cost of attendance calculator under that section. This is all for 2018-2019, the new forms for next year won't be available until late June / early July (that's the earliest you can apply for financial aid with RVC). But it should give you an idea of what you can expect if you look at the stuff for this year.

For 2018-2019, the maximum amount students could request for living expenses etc (not including tuition) was $29,201. The money you get comes in 3 installments first year (I'm pretty sure), and you won't see the first one until early October (possibly the last week of September if you're lucky). If you wanted to borrow more than that, you'd have to ask for it and explain why. Supporting a spouse and pets with an international move will not cut it. Or you could go for private loans.

Canadian here. I'm in a Canadian school so can't directly help. But my boyfriend went overseas for a second degree and ended up with a bank loan because the government won't budge on their costs as it is based on Canadian costs which are substantially less than international. If you have people willing to cosign, you'll likely have to look into a PLC or something similar from a bank which is a bitch because it will collect interest while you are in school. But that's the only option afaik

Thank you for the info. I did try to look at the COA calculator on their website but it downloaded blank when I did so. Was that $29,201 or pounds?

Thanks for the information! That is really quite unfortunate.

I was unable to get into any Canadian schools multiple times over and got accepted to the RVC. That is affirming of my ability to become a vet but the cost is outlandish for a Canadian...

Too bad really.

Yeah the cost outside of Canada really sucks. I don't think I could have done it if I didn't get in domestically.

All the best to you in your future studies!
