if you have done your state taxes, then you can start to fill out your fafsa (do it asap!). you can fill it out online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

you also need to get your federal taxes done too, but you can submit your fafsa after doing your state taxes and add the data from your federal taxes later (i have submitted my fafsa online with state tax info, but i still have to get my federal states done).

all you have to do right now is fill out the fafsa online as soon as possible. if you can, it is good to put your parents income/taxes info down EVEN if you're considered an "independent". it doesn't matter for health professions b/c everyone in dschool is considered independent. what putting down your parents info will do is help make you possibly eligible for additional health professions loan. so go ahead and add your parents info if you can. it can't hurt and can only help get you an additional health professions loan.

financial aid offices are pretty good about working with you from there.

after you fill out your fafsa (it takes forever to fill out, but its well worth it!) then sometime before school starts, you will just need to go to your school's financial aid office and sign a piece of paper saying that you "accept" the loans. you might have to do some "loan counseling" thing online or whatever that just tells them you know that you are responsible for paying back your loans.

fill out the fafsa asap. submit it. wait til you hear more info from the financial aid office. it's that simple. good luck! let us know if you have any more questions

p.s. are the bajillion pages to fill out from tufts a paper version of the FAFSA? because if it is, you can do it online. you can also save your work online and come back to it later. i'm not sure what else the bajillion pages would be for.

I'm quite appalled by the general intelligence of some of you who will be dentists sooner or later. Like for real, you really gonna just not know how to spell financial? Are you serious? There is nothing funny about this and no it couldn't have been a typo.

I'm quiet apaled by your ignorance. Firste of all, how can you be so shure that it was not a typo? Secondley, there are so many difinitions for inteligence that even the sychologists cannot agree on. Thirdly, the guy has allready got into a dental schole, which means he has the potentials; otherwise he wooldn't hav been choosen by the admishion comitee. Fourthly, spelling is not correlated with any skills in dentistry. You better calm down and spend your time on your personnal statement rater than throwing weaksauce attacks at random peopole on the forume.

Dogg are you serious? A typo is spelling application as aplication or believe as beleive. Spelling financial as finantial is not a typo, it's ******ation or lack of erudition at least. He must have that special keyboard where C and T are next to each other. Plus, you're probably not much better. You probably go to Tufts or some sorry azz school. Oh and you're hot now cuz you're a dental student? GTFOOH with that 3.2 GPA. You can't see me little homey 😎

👍 I lyke dis kidd!!

p.s. i got the state and federal taxes thing backwards. if you have your FEDERAL tax down, then you can fill out the fafsa and do state taxes later. not vice versa

You should relax about spelling.. seriously.

As for the forms, well you just need to start at the beginning. Sometimes if you fill out the FAFSA and CSS profile, you'll have some of the major questions already answered, so have those handy. I just turned in all of my financial aid forms.

However, I'm a bit worried because my CPA said that my 2008 tax returns won't be ready until mid April. This is OK, because Tufts said that the deadline is May 1. However, my parents' 2008 tax returns won't be done until probably July... something about the return being 4 inches thick...

I'm not exactly sure what to do at this point... I mean, I don't want to miss out stuff that's based off of parents' information. And the financial aid lady at Tufts really isn't helping me out... in fact, she's being rather unsympathetic to my situation.

as you know, when you start professional school you are independet. it is better you have your parents information but it is not necessary.

This kid sounds like he's JimmyChoo's cousin. What's with all the hate on Tufts?

Ban this POS, dude is NOT FUNNY AT ALL. End yourself dude

Yea Im sure Mr.Vick's dog won't last long on these forums. He kind of reminds me of Whoispittsnoggle, or whatever that clowns name was.

Sorry for staying off topic.

Thanks for the help guys! I started filling it out online. Waaaay easier than all those paper apps!!
And yes, misspelling "financial" is a little embarrassing, but English is my 2nd language and most of the time I have to think twice before spelling something correctly. I was just in a hurry and didn't double check, since it is just a forum and not a PS or anything like that. Just because some of us can't remember how to spell certain words (I've confused t's and c's in word like these ever since I learned how to write in English) doesn't mean we will not make good dentists. Even though I speak with hardly any accent, I am still learning English, because when you start learning a new language as a teen, you never quite master it as a native speaker. One thing I will say, MichaelVicksDog, is I'm soooo happy you are just a pre-dent for now, since I would never want someone like you as my classmate. I think you will have a very hard time getting accepted with this attitude, and if accepted, will have a hard time making friends in your class and in the dental field. Best of luck in life!

It is okay Dentist08, just ignore that guy. I am looking forward to meeting you in the fall...Tufts is great!!!

Oh I have a question, have you filled out the CSS profile yet? I am wondering if I need to send a sighed copy of my tax return to college board?

Appreciate anyone's input.

i got this over a month ago and haven't filled it yet, but did fill out fafsa months ago...does this take long to do and does it require getting a lot of paper work together?

yes, i am telling you, it takes long. I found it more annoying than FAFSA.

wow this is confusing as hell, my taxes aren't completed yet...do they have to be done before I mail these forms?

Mmmm, the financial aid lady at Tufts basically said that the only thing that really will delay your aid (besides the FAFSA an CSS) is a failure to turn in your 2008 income tax return. So, it's best that you finish those taxes ASAP.

Man, this whole financial aid process is ridiculous. I have a feeling it's meant to screen out the feint of heart.

Is FAFSA available to Canadians who are going to be studying in the US?

The FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, so I don't think it's available to Canadians (its purpose is to award U.S. government funds to U.S. students).

I agree with y'all that the FAFSA is annoyingly long... But is this seriously the first time you're applying for financial aid?? Color me green with envy! 🙂 I just did my 7th FAFSA (I think).

hey guys i have a question about financial aid too. and its regarding looking for outside sources that might have better interest rate than your school can provide. anyone with any experience with that? thanx in advance

supraman, i suggest you complete your tax and then do the CSS profile, i think it makes it way easier.

i think we don't need to send a signed copy of our tax return to college board, but we do have to send it to Tufts.

Can I do it without the tax return? Like can I estimate it or base it off last year or something? I called Tufts Fin Aid and they told me to do the stupid CSS profile asap.

i just checked my CSS profile again and i found that there is no button anywhere on the page for corrections on my submitted profile, so i am assuming that we can't make corrections once we submit it. Seriously, you just have to have your parents' and your own tax returns in front of you to answer some of the questions. Even i had mine w/ me when i was filling out the forms, there were a couple questions i was not sure of.

i just got an email from the financial aid office about the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Scholarship program? Can anyone tell me the pros and cons about it?

i just got an email from the financial aid office about the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Scholarship program? Can anyone tell me the pros and cons about it?

Pros: they pay for your tuition
Cons: you owe them the same number of years that they paid off your tuition

With the NHSC Scholar program, they will give you $50,000 for tuition and around $1200 monthly for living expenses. This means you will still need to take out a small loan from Tufts for the remainder of your tuition costs. NHSC is year for year, unlike the HPSP in which you serve 1yr active/1yr inactive for every year the military pays for your education (everyone serves 8yrs).

With NHSC, you must serve @ least two years, and with the military @ least three years active (3yrs active+5yrs inactive or 4yrs active+4yrs inactive).

With NHSC, you have to work in a designated under-served area. I looked it up online today, and there is only ONE JOB LISTING currently hiring in the whole state of MA. This means that if you enroll, you might have to work outside the state of Massachusetts to serve your NHSC commitment. The good thing is that it will only be two years... oh and you still get paid as a dentist working for a NHSC site... though the pay rate is 25% less than what you would make @ a private practice.

With NHSC, if you fail/change your mind about working in an under-served area after you graduate, you will not only look bad but the government will charge the amount you borrowed times three!!

Now the lady I spoke to on the phone today concering NHSC and the loan repayment program said that there are other options. The MA Loan repayment program is very similar to NHSC. However, they will only give you $40,000 and you apply AFTER you graduate. You incur the costs of tuition your entire four years. The good thing is that you will still get paid as a dentist (but again, 25% less than in private practice) and there were @ least four job listings for the loan repayment program when I looked in Suffolk county. This means that after graduating, if you don't find a job in private practice (VERY VERY UNLIKELY), you can @ least count on this program to help your community and pay for loans.

The reason there are more sites for the loan repayment program versus scholar program is that some facilities qualify for NHSC while others don't. The one NHSC site that a scholar can apply to in MA serves the homeless. The other sites probably charge patients on an income scale and thus do not qualify for NHSC but does qualify for the loan repayment program.

I hate thinking about how much money I'm going to be borrowing, but in the end, enrolling into dental school is going to be the greatest investment I can ever make for myself. I think keeping that in mind eases the burden of borrowing so much money.

Oh, and for the rest of you guys who are being lazy about filling out your FA 👎 There's a deadline, it's approaching, git 2 it! 🙂

Thanks so much DentGuy, you have given me more info than I expected to get on here. One more thing, what you mean by "active and inactive" when you explained the terms of services/agreement after graduation.

I'm quite appalled by the general intelligence of some of you who will be dentists sooner or later. Like for real, you really gonna just not know how to spell financial? Are you serious? There is nothing funny about this and no it couldn't have been a typo.

totally uncalled for!!! u are just a hater.:meanie:

With HPSP, active means that you go to wherever the military assigns you for the number of years you take on their loan. Example: you sign on with the HPSP for a four year program. You will owe them four years of service at a military base (airforce base, navy base, or army base).

However, you will also owe the military a certain number of inactive years. Inactive means that you are free to go back to private practice, but can be called back if needed. I think no dentist has ever been called back while serving their inactive commitment in the Air Force. I'm not sure about the other branches.

The total number (active and inactive) you have to serve is eight years. This is for everyone. So if you sign on as a D1 for a four year scholarship, you will owe 4 yrs active and 4 yrs inactive. If you sign on for a 3 yr scholarship, you will owe them a 3 yr active and 5 yr inactive.

The military will also recommend you take an extra year for AEGD that will not count for the number of active years you owe. If you don't, you'll probably be stuck doing amalgams the entire time you're on a base.

Military is a good route, all specializations are 2 years (ortho, endo, perio, etc) instead of 3 years in civilian. The pay while doing your training is a lot higher (72-80k) depending on location. If you decide to specialize, you will be done with your military service in 6 years total, if you took the 4 year scholarship. You will come out with above average to fantastic hand skills but you will also be $450,000 (gross pay at 75k/year) heavier in the wallet and have no debt which could be close to 300k for Tufts, BU, NYU, etc.

If you're just doing the 4 year payback and like to be a general dentists then the military route is really a great financial package. If you take into consideration the stipend they give you during school and add that to your military dentist pay, you will gross about 100k/year and have no debt. Add that to the $300,000 the gov't paid for you and you will in theory "earned" close to a million gross pay in your 4 year payback. I doubt that is possible working as an associate for 4 years. (30% production of 3.33 million lol)
