I have heard a good idea is to use the optometry blue book, find all the old docs, and make an attempt to meet them somehow.

I have been to local society meetings but I find it fairly difficult to make a meaningful connection with any of the older docs.

My question is, what have you found successful in terms of identifying a practice for sale, or finding an older doc willing to take you on and slowly allowing you to buy them out?

Do you look online? School websites?

Talk to the folks in charge of the state associations, they usually know if anyone is pondering selling.

Agree.

Many states host an annual reception for prospective sellers/employers to meet those looking for opportunities. Optical sales reps can be a good source as well (their advice will be blended with opinion and rumor as well, so take with a grain of salt).

Best option: Find the area you want to practice in, meet as many OD's in person as possible (at their practice if you can to scope things out). An intro letter in advance may help. Ask if they know of any opportunities in the area?
-Some will point you towards someone they know.
-Some will blow you off.
-Some will suddenly give thought to selling even though they didn't before.

This last group is the really good prospect.

Practice brokers are the last place I'd look.

thank you for both of your input. I will definitely take your advice to use.

Here's what I would do:

1. Send out letters of interest of employment in your target city with your CV and state your long term goal is to be an owner of a practice.

2. Go to the state board website and look up the doctors in the zip code that you are wanting to locate in or work in. This should narrow down your list from hundreds to dozens.

3. There are dozens of reasons for wanting to sell an office and it is not exclusive to just retiring due to age.

4. Post an ad in the state association newsletter/website.
