Finding Research Prior to M1

I'm very passionate about research and was looking to get my feet wet with clinical research prior to attending medical school in the upcoming academic year (not sure where I will be going just yet). I'm in a big city with many academic hospitals and medical schools, but am not sure if I'll be staying here for medical school. How can I go about reaching out for research? Do I just cold-email residents and PDs?
