Finding the right GPR

Hey Guys,
I will be applying for a GPR next year and I was just wondering how those of you who have or are going to apply narrowed down the selections. Basically, what I am asking is: how do I find the best Program for me?

Honestly, I just want to get as much experience as possible.

Possibly learn to place implants and do as much endo as I can. Rotary endo that is.

Whatcha think?

Do I need to contact programs and ask them what kinds of things I will be doing or is that published info somewhere?

I don't think you'll find that information published anywhere, unless you consider Dental Town published. I'd go there and put a post up saying what you want to get out of a GPR and ask people to tell you their experience where they went.

If you can narrow down what part of the country you want to be in that would help. To get the real nitty-gritty you'll need to talk to recent grads or current residents.

All the ones I applied to would have fit your bill. One of the programs was 2 years but 75% of the residents quit after one. There are some great opportunities out there but also some real dogs. The ones that are great will tell you they are great. The ones that are dogs will tell you they're great too. That's why you need to talk to the residents.

I think a GPR or AEGD is one of the better things you can do to shorten your learning curve.

Best thing to do is to go visit the programs and talk to the residents. New residents start July 1, so go a little later or earlier than July to get an accurate picture of what goes on there from the residents.

The only published guide out there is the ASDA guide for post-doc programs.

Implants - I've heard the residents at Baltimore VA do implants galore. As far as rotary, I assume it's becoming more commonplace these days, but just ask the residents or program director.

Definitely contact the programs to learn more about what they do there, or you'll find yourself interviewing at programs that are all oral sugery and no restorative.
