Hello everyone

I am applying this cycle. When I was 16, I was playing basketball at school , and "my friend" tripped me on purpose and I fell on my fingers. I broke 3 fingers in my hand , and the growth plate in my middle finger was affected. Also 2 fingers including the middle one , had to be put back in place because they were wobbly. I did therapy for about 2 weeks only because that's what the doctor said ( this was in my home country back in 2006).

My finger hurts almost every day , depending on what I do with my hand. Some days it hurts more than others. Lately with dental school apps I have been worried because I don't want my finger to cause my performance to decrease and it really worries me. I am going to make an appointment with a physical therapist to see if he can help me a bit. Does anyone have any suggestions or has anyone been in similar positions ? I just hope I'm not the only one in this boat.
Also the movement in that middle finger is not 100% although I understand that I will be using more the whole hand , rather than just 2 fingers per se.

I would appreciate any comments or anyone that has been in the same situation

Thx

Nop. It does not hurt for note taking. But when I do different things. E.g I went to the park today with my son and after 2 hours, my finger really hurt. When I clean the bathroom, hurts too. More with everyday tasks

Well from what I've seen a dentist holds the drill, explorer, mirror, etc in a fashion very similar to holding a pen/pencil. So if your fingers don't hurt after a bunch of note taking then I think you should be fine.

I'd say visit a hand doctor before going to a physical therapist. If the doc takes X-rays he can say there is or isn't something wrong, either way you know for sure. A physical therapist can only strengthen your hand and increase its range of motion, not take away the pain.

Thy makes a lot of sense. That gives me some hope. Thank you. 🙂

I will contact a hand doctor. Idk how to start looking for one , because I didn't know there were doctors that socialized on hands. But ill google it. 🙂 thank you.

Yea I was surprised they exist too. I went to one cuz I had an incident in my senior year of high school. I found a hand specialist and went to him to see what the damage was. Turns out I developed Raynaud's phenomenon (cutting off of blood to finger tips in mild to freezing weather).

Have you thought about pretending to be a dentist for a whole day? Perhaps you can buy some modeling clay and something similar to a dental instrument (ie. an explorer). Play with it for hours and do all kind of hand movements. At the end see how comfortable or uncomfortable you felt. I believe with practice you could be as good as any other dentist, and that shouldn't be an impediment for you. Just do what you need to do for now so that you are not afraid of your performance later on.
Good luck 🙂

i like this answer. or do you have a dentist who will let you practice with a drill on some molds? i got to do this and it was pretty cool. i broke a finger a while back and it didn't heal right, so i know what you mean and it stinks. definitely see a hand doctor and if necessary train yourself not to put weight on the finger that hurts the most when you are using your hand (which is awkward when it's your middle finger because that's mine too, but you can do it).

the hand doctor may tell you the option is some surgery that requires you to have pins in your hand for many months and when it's done you might not even be able to use that joint. there's also another physical therapy type thing you can do for your hands that i really like, just PM me if you want to hear about it.

This makes sense. I will talk to the dentists I shadow, and ask him to let me pretend, or practice with some instruments, to see how my finger feels. Thank you everyone for the suggestions 🙂
