OMG, i live in texas and i was lucky to get a tech job without any experience. Today was my first day and it was pretty crazy. I guess i never thought about it being to physically taxing. Everybody is on their feet the whole 8hrs, including the pharmacist and u get a 30min lunch break. The pharmacist did not even take a break and he is pretty old. Thats def one thing to consider before going into pharmacy, you have to build up stamina. Its so fast paced to, we also have a drive through window so i was running from point A to B every 30secs. I was really happy with the amount of stuff i was able to learn the first day, im studying to take my exam next month. I also had my first angry patient encounter today, the guy cursed out everyone in the pharmacy because he wanted Brand name and we gave him generic by mistake.. like it makes any difference really. I was so scared he was gonna come back into the store with a gun and kill us all, so i kept checking the door for the next 2hrs after it happened, planning my escape. ITs really important to get experience before applying to schools, for your own sake so u can make an informed decision and aslo so you have juicy stories to tell the adcom @ d interview..lol

congrats.
I want to do that too, i talk to a manager from walgreen aroudn my place
they mention it has to be someone who is either certified, or currently taking classes for pharmacy tech[as a on-the-job] type. So I'm trying to get certified, but wow sounds like quite a experience as your first day.

Sounds like you got lucky. That sounds a lot easier than my first day as a tech.

I feel like a lot of retail pharmacy can be pretty monotonous. The pharmacist pretty those the same thing over and over, and the once in a while he gets to counsel to patients on the drug information. But i still like pharmacy, i probably would not do retail pharmacy for too long cause i might get bored. Its amazing how many people in this country rely on drugs just to function everyday. I felt bad for the people who could not afford their prescriptions or had to pay out of pocket because the insurance company did not cover it. But of course they direct all their anger toward the pharmacy and not to the insurance company. The health system in this country is pretty whack. Only the rich can afford the good plans and get covered properly.

public aid. i work on the southside of chicago and pretty much everyone gets medication free of charge.

You get lunch breaks?!?! Must be nice! The pharmacist cant take a break (legally) without closing the place down. Where I work that means no breaks for anyone. You just stand and eat and fill.

PS.. watch with those juicy stories... HIPA is around every corner.:scared:

I've been a pharm tech for 2 years... then off for a year... then back currently for almost a year now. the job is REALLY stressful and not as glamourous as you may think. there's a lot of difficulties and MANY chances to make mistakes. If you are absolutely sure you want to be in pharmacy, you HAVE to experience it first hand working/volunteering there or you may not make it in the pharmacy business. the thing is... many newly graduated pharmacists are coming out, working for a few months and getting fed up with the amount of work they have to do and the problems they receive from their customers. it gets VERY repetitive to fill countless (150-200+) prescriptions EVERYDAY for the next 20 years at least.

wow congrats! my first day was like that...not only is it busy, it's also all very new to you. PLUS, if you mess up...PEOPLE DIE! haha, so don't worry, but don't mess up 😀
