One of the schools I'm applying to wants an additional essay/"explanation" (it's vague) because I'm a first generation college student. However, I don't feel that being first generation has prevented me from things, or been an obstacle I've overcome, or defined my education so far and I feel like I've been very fortunate to attend college and be applying to medical school. I guess my question is what to even write for this at all. A lot of my application centers around teaching/mentoring including at low income schools, do I tie this in? Everything seems kind of silly because I don't want to sound as if I'm using it as some huge obstacle I've overcome. Any insight would be very appreciated, sorry this was vague.
Usually trailblazers don't have ready role models e.g. parents or a support infrastructure while going through college because no one in their direct family has gone through the experience. The notion behind respecting a first generation college student is linked to the idea that you came to value a higher educational experience that was self-inspired rather than being guided by parents to just make the decision to do it.
