How many first-generation college students are in mstp programs? Are there statistics for this?

I am first-generation and just wondering about things that I could emphasize to set me apart from the rest of the applicants.

There's a lot of children of immigrants who never went to college in these programs. Not aware of any statistics though. The only ones who would have such statistics would be the AAMC. Try looking around their website.

Well...to set yourself apart you can describe any adversity you had to face on the way to college or you could show how much you want it.

Umm....being a 1st generation college grad does NOT by itself make you disadvantaged. I am one. I think I'd laugh at someones app if they checked the disadvantaged box and said..."poor me...my parents didn't go to college."

That being said, if you truly are a disadvantaged applicant, you can mention the fact that you are a first generation student in your essay that addresses that fact.

1st generation here too, zero issues with getting acceptances. I think it actually helped.

first gen here as well... never even considered putting it in my app. couldnt hurt, i suppose, unless the schools think you're really trying to reach.

1st gen here as well. I don't really anybody really cares as its not that uncommon even as a white guy like myself. If you come from a disadvantaged background, then that become a different story. With that said, it never hurts telling your whole story. I know I am proud of my family history and my family is very proud me. No shame in saying hey I think this is cool.
