Hi!

I'm Southeast Asian, and the first in my family to go to college. Can I list myself as a URM for AMCAS? I'm not sure if URM is a designation based only on race.

Thanks!

URM stands for under-represented minority... so yes, it is based on race...

Right which means unfortunately you don't qualify as URM. I'm not sure if this is a little different for people that are Hmong and that apply to certain schools...either way, there are other ways for you to point out your unique education history and I think there will be schools that finding it compelling.

There typically will be a separate section on the secondaries (if not in the primary) where you are asked if you're the first to attend college in your family. Schools that come to mind are Baylor and University of Arizona (both on secondaries)...there are many more that ask this. It is not, as previous posters have said already, URM status.

actually means underrepresented in medicine these days, but yeah, same definition. not first generation college student

"Underrepresented in medicine means those racial and ethnic populations that are underrepresented in the medical profession relative to their numbers in the general population."

In less kind terms, stop trying to game the system, scum bag.

You can have a cookie for getting federal financial aid and acting like it's an accomplishment to go to college nowadays.

I honestly feel like that if you have to ask SDN whether you are URM or not, then you are not URM.

First-generation is less uniformly defined from what I've seen as well. Some schools ask if you're the first in your family to attend college others ask if you're the first to attain a bachelor's degree, some ask if you're the first to go to grad/professional school. Some ask all three. Not sure how each of these answers factors into their process.
