Khakis and a polo sounds good. I was really nervous about the same thing and it turned out everyone at the lab I'm at wears jeans, t-shirts, sometimes even shorts or sweatpants....just don't wear sweats to your interview

Dockers and dress shirt. You dont work at best buy

I am shocked how often questions like these come up on SDN. Amongst some of the brightest people out there....youd think people would know what to wear when.

You are going to a meeting regarding a potential job (volunteer or paid its still the same) Always wear minimum slacks and a button down...tie or no tie depends on the "formality."

Its really simple: If you go dressed professionally and everyone is in jeans you may get made fun of a little bit but at least they know you are serious about the position/whatever in question, and mature.

If you roll in to a professional meeting/interview looking like a slob thinking the environment will be casual you might be up **** creek when you find out that isnt the case. It is almost always better to be a little overdressed than grossly underdressed.

Besides....dont you think its nice to dress nicely sometimes? I know I enjoy to from time to time.

Very true.

Maybe I should stick with ladies' fashion advice...

And the funny thing is....I worked at Best Buy in highschool...and they are REQUIRED to wear nice non cargo khakis. If you dont you cant punch in haha.

I'd say it depends. The first lab I worked in was at a very conservative institution, and my meeting was a more formal interview-type meeting, so I wore dress pants, dress shoes, dress shirt. I fit in well enough but, honestly, I don't think I would have been out of place in a suit.

The second lab I worked in was at my school, and it was more of a casual "yeah, sure, stop by my office whenever you get a chance" type of meeting. I don't recall what I wore, but I'm pretty certain I didn't wear a dress shirt. If I were to guess, I probably wore jeans and a polo. Whatever it was, it was WAY more casual than dress shirt/tie (it might have even been shorts 😱😱😱😱😱😱 but probably not). A shirt and tie would have been overkill. I'd say "dockers" and a polo would suffice.
