Hey all!

I'll be taking Intro to Neuro in the spring and I can't wait. To all neuroscience majors what are some of the positives and negatives of your classes and how would you rate the major overall?

Take UHC-Human Physio with Yates. Second best class there. First is Pathology: The Study of Disease, but that's for seniors.

Pitt Neuro majors unite!!! 😍😍 c/o 2012 here

Neuro was a great major, but be ready to work in Intro and Functional Neuroanatomy. I'm assuming Stricker isn't teaching Intro anymore, so I don't know how that will go for you, but that was one of my favorite courses in undergrad. For Functional, Sesack is a really good professor, but it's notoriously the hardest class in the major (I was also interviewing while taking that class, making it even worse). Take Johnson for Neurophys. I took Human Phys with Sved and I really liked him. We had Yates for a few lectures in phys, and he taught us a bit this year in med school...personally I like Sved better but I know people really like Yates.

For electives, I had Speaking of Science with Cameron and that Psychiatric Disorders class with Grace. Both were great. Speaking of Science is especially beneficial if you are interested in research, as it teaches you how to present.

Overall, absolutely loved the major. The professors are great and there's a huge amount of research going on if you want to get involved in that. It also gives you a great background for when you do neuro in med school.

+1

I didn't like Sved. Yates wasn't amazing, but the class was much more small and personalized. The exams were highly clinical and required creative thinking, which I loved. Labs were boring though.

The biggest loss is Stricker, assuming he isn't teaching. His UHC-Intro to Neuro and Homeostasis classes were amazing. They taught me to how to read journal articles and critically analyze them.

thanks for the info and input from both of you, it is much appreciated!

Neuroscience is an awesome major. You picked the right one. 😉

Neurobiology and psychology double major reporting in. Neuro is the best major. 😎

positives: you'll know your physio back and forth
negatives: You wont know jacksh** about micro/immuno (assuming you dont take any micro or immunology classes in UG)

would you recommend micro, immuno or molecular? or 2 of the 3? which would be most beneficial in the long run?

They're all awesome classes to take. There's really no "long run" benefit, since you study immuno and micro to much greater depth in med school. Take mol bio if you need electives, but I'm pretty sure that molecular bio is required by your major.
