I am a freshman at Georgetown this year and I have atrocious first semester grades. Sad thing is I worked hard and still did terrible. I am new to this site so please don't laugh at my grades.

Chem I = (B-)
Bio I - I don't know my grade exactly, but the lowest I got was a B+ (I will find out exactly in a couple of days)
Political Science I= (A-)
Latin - I honestly have no idea about this grade, could be anywhere from a (B+) to an (A-).

This means that the highest I got this semester is a 3.35.

The lowest I got this semester is a 3.25.

I don't think I can make it into medical school. I don't even think I can do much better next semester. I don't know what went wrong. I did all the readings for my classes/worked all the sample problems in the back of the book/studied for all my tests-quizzes/did all the supplemental worksheets/went to office hours/did all my homework. I don't know if I can do much better next semester. I don't think I can handle Georgetown, should I transfer to some other school where I might be able to do better(i.e. my state school)? My parents(both are doctors) told me I won't get into an MD school because of my grades.🙁🙁🙁

i think the tests went wrong

First of all .. it's your first semester. It is always hard to adjust. This was also my worst semester.

Second of all... you have about 5 more semesters before you will even apply (or more depending when you do) which means there is SO MUCH time for you to pull this up. I don't even see a C in your grade breakdown. I got a C my first semester in Gen Chem. Just do your best and keep at it. For some reason, grades seem to come easier as you learn how to become successful at college level courses. You are no where NEAR out of the game yet. Chill out... enjoy break... and get ready to destroy your classes next semester.

Good Luck to you!

Your parents have already been through the process; it may have been that they've forgotten what it was like to be a stressed-out pre-med?

Try even harder next semester. Read ahead and read some more; sit near the front of the class, but not so close that your professor finds you to be another annoying pre-med; go to office hours, TA's, free tutoring at school. Your gpa is incredibly important.

I don't think your first semester grades will hurt you too much because they are your first semester grades! You're adjusting to a new kind of academic environment. You can pull this up!

Remember that if you really want something (like to be a doctor), you shouldn't let a few grades stop you. If you really, really want something, there's not much that can stop you. Don't let the fact that your parents are doctors discourage you/make you stupid. I have felt similarly (my older sibling is a Johns Hopkins medical student and I came close to a C in orgo this semester...if it wasn't for all the things I mentioned earlier, which saved my grade), and I know it can put pressure on you. Don't let it get to you. Fight on!

It's your first semester!! Buckle down the next, and you will be fine. I'm a sophomore who was in your situation, and you can get out of it. I had a 3.5 my first semester, 3.1 the next and then finally realized what I had to do and now am working towards that "upward trend" that med schools want to see. Don't get discouraged!! Just keep your head up, and do your best!

I don't think I can handle Georgetown, should I transfer to some other school where I might be able to do better(i.e. my state school)?

only if you hate the school. right now you have no reason to even think about transferring. look at your grades! they are not THAT bad. hell, i'd say they're not bad at all. one B- is going to keep you out of med school?! no. calm down. continue with undergrad. ENJOY COLLEGE A LITTLE!!! it's your first semester and that takes a little getting used to.

these will be the best 4 years of your life if you are at a school that is good for you. relax.

Thank you all for the help.

Grade Update:

Biology- (A-) Extremely suprised about this and really happy.
Chem- (B-)
Latin - Still don't know yet
Poli Sci - (A-)

So my gpa for Texas Medical Schools (I am a Texas resident and they don't use the +/- system) is: around a 3.7 without my Latin Grade. I can finally calm down, sorry if I seemed extremely neurotic.

My gpa for schools that do use the +/- system is around a 3.4.🙁 Time to step my game up next semester.

Well the professor would give us long tests with MCAT questions on it, and expected us to be able to finish the long tests in 50 minutes. I had an 89 in the class, and it didn't seem like the prof would curve the class up, but he had to because other bio classes at Georgetown had more kids getting As/A-s/B+ then our class. At Georgetown, only a certain amount of kids can make As/A-s/B+/B/B-s, so really your competing with your classmates, but everyone is really helpful and not cutthroat compeitive.

OP, just chill out and have a few drinks. It *will* make you feel better!!
