Upon recommendation of numerous others on this forum, I took a few days off from work and actually went out to a farm owned by a close friend (his parents own it) and received my first true experience with animals.

Prior to this, I have not seen cows up close and have not touched animals other than standard pets.

It is not my plan to work with large animals, but I figured this is probably the only chance I get to working with animals intensively and I have to say that I really enjoyed the experience. I am not a fan of the smell, but handling the animals and taking care of their needs for several days did not "bother" me in any way (I am saying this as I can't really say I loved scooping poop, but working with the animals was pleasant).

Well that is certainly good to hear. I don't think anyone actually enjoys scooping the poop (of any animal), you just sort of get used to it and focus on the more enjoyable stuff.

I don't know... i love mucking horse stalls. I love the horsey smells and it's nice to do mindless tasks every once in a while.

That's great that you went out to get some hands on. Good for you! Start logging those hours, it'll make life easier when you apply. Ask them if they are having a vet come out anytime soon and see if you can get out there while the vet is there.
Have fun!

Haha! Try working on a dairy farm! I have never seen so much poo in my life!

One time I was trying to chase down a cow going in the wrong direction and I slipped on the floor and stood up with my whole front covered in poo!

Picking up poo isn't so bad...it's dealing with nasty, slimy, bloody diarrhea that I don't particularly enjoy 😛

Yeah... I like mucking horse stalls too. Sick horse poo though... smells GROSS! Haha, that's the technical term for it.

But that's great you're getting some experience. Have fun, and enjoy it!

Well done. Cows, horses and goats are pretty cool, and I say that as a smallies person. I think cows are actually a great intro to animal handling. They're so placid, slow moving and just kind of there in a zen-like way. Also, the longer you look at them, the more they look like some sort of space alien. (OK, I'm willfully ignoring memories of chasing heifers through the yard into the shed after 500 stressed out, pooping cows have passed through 🙂 )

Good for you!

Keep in mind animal experience isn't the same as veterinary experience, so you'll need clinical hours too. (unless you've figure out some other way to get time working with a DVM)
