the first two semesters doesn't even seem like dental school...just seems like you are a super science major....doesn't really get into much dentistry until the first summer.
Oh yeah, and second semester is hell. Difficult, uninteresting, and not very related to practical, clinical dentistry.

Summer sessions are extra at almost every dental school. You can find some information on the bursar's site for some of the universities if it isn't already listed on the dental school site. For instance, University of Virginia allows you plug in your dental school year, the session, fall, spring or summer, and will display the tuition for in state or out of state students for that semester.

Also wanted to add that the schools will disperse to you the amount you need to get through the entire school year. So, they will lend you enough money for tuition, equipment, books and living expenses for the entire year, summer sessions included. Good luck with your dental school plans.

at UF there is no summer tuition, but there is a financial aid disbursement for living expenses through the summer.

waw. thank you guys for your feed back. It is REALLY expensive to attend dental school. I am applying for the class of 2011, I am getting interviews and hope to join you guys real soon. I am graduating this december, so I guess I am gonna have to work really hard to get some extra money.
On a related note, WHY do dental schools make you take a summer course? isn't four years enough to teach someone general dentistry( without taking summer classes)? it is really expensive for some of us.

No, 4 years isn't enough. There really is just too much to learn. After 4 years of dental school and 2 years of practice, there are still many procedures I have not done and so many new things to still learn about. That's why continuing education is important as a dentist to stay on top of all the new things and review all the old things to make you a better practitioner.

I'm not convinced it is.

You do four years to become a competent dentist ... enough so that you won't hurt anyone. Then you become an expert after years of practice.
