Just curious about the employment landscape in psychiatry with regards to flexibility. Is it possible to have a job where you can work as many or as few hours as you wish per year and get paid simply by an hourly rate? Not talking about jobs that give a fixed number of vacation days and you have to work the rest. I'm talking about more like a paradigm you might see in emergency medicine where at the start of each month you forecast which days and how many hours you want to work. Is there something like that in psychiatry? I'm not asking because I'm lazy, I'm asking because some weeks I may want to work very long hours and some weeks very few, and may not know until a week or two ahead of time. Just curious. Thanks!

Best specialty in medicine. Shhhhhh.

Ok great! Thanks. Psych ER sounds interesting as well as locums work.

Yes, absolutely best specialty in all of medicine and we can keep it our little secret 🙂

Is psychiatry locums work generally available in NYC or would one generally have to travel?

I'm sure it's available in NYC, just don't expect to get paid much there vs. other places given that NYC does not suffer a shortage of psychiatrists compared to the rest of the country.
