Floater - hour of availability

Hi all,

Please give me some advice what to do with this issue.
When I applied for the job, I only check "day shift" for hour of availability. I'm hired as a floater. I have been working day shifts for a few months, and now I'm scheduled to cover night shifts for a PTO coverage.

I would like not to work night shifts (overnight shifts), and I'm not sure if I should contact the scheduler to change it. I'm a recent graduate. I wonder if I do, they will put a red flag on my profile that prevents me from getting future positions in the company?

Please give me some advice.

Is there a legitimate reason why you can't work night shifts, or do you just not want to?

Do you have loans to pay off?

Do you want to get hired on full-time eventually, or are you content with just being a floater?

Here's my advice to you:
Continue working day shifts as a floater, provide PTO coverage on night shifts as needed, and work as many hours as you can. Unfortunately, as a new grad in these market conditions, you need to pay your dues for awhile and show you're a "team player".
 
What company do you work for?
If you work for Walgreen's (doesn't look like it) all you have to do is pick up shifts from other districts by going to scheduling. It also helps to talk with scheduling from not only your district, but other districts and tell them your availability and that your open to additional shifts. It depends where you work, but scheduling is more than happy oblige because your helping them out too.
 
When you restrict your availability, there is a chance that they will give you less than 40h, at 24h, 32h or nothing. Take that chance at your own risk. All they have to say is "We only have night shifts and you can't work nights."
 
If you want a store position the chances of it being days only are pretty slim to none. If you really can't work the night, then tell them you can't. If your goal is to get out of the float pool you will have to work more varied shifts to get a store. I should say a large number of pharmacist position require some rotation though an evening shift.
 
you have to rotate and work evening shifts...there's no way around it. it's not fair to others that you just work days. If you're talking about overnight...then that's different.

Exactly what I do to the I can only work 8-430 M-F techs especially the ones that are older from the longs days who are just lazy as hell. I got rid of 3 just because of that and hired newbies with open availability that we could train.

To be correct, what I meant was about covering "overnight shift". I'm sorry for the confusion. Most of stores I work they close at 9:00 pm except for the 24-hr store, so I thought night shift was the same with overnight shift.
 
Yeah then that changes things completely. You just went from "um why did you even pick pharmacy?" to a normal person lol but yeah they probably kept putting you overnight bc you are the only one that didn't speak up, so they thought you were ok with it... just let them know. It's not that big of a deal.
 
Well, back when I was a full time floater they scheduled me days, evenings and overnights. I found out my colleagues in a different district (also full time floaters) never had to do night shifts because there was a specific overnight rph floater. I did contact my scheduler and she said I could not refuse to work overnights. I felt like I was being taken advantage of, and ended up leaving the district and going somewhere else part time and didn't have to worry about that anymore. I don't know what the solution is, but was in the same boat a while back.
