flu shots

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Flu shots only protects you from the most likely viral strain that will hit the U.S. that particular year, so there's chance that it may not give you full protection

This year's flu shot contains A/New Caledonia/20/99-like (H1N1), A/Panama/2007/99 (H3N2), and the B/Hong Kong/330/2001-like virus strains.

The dominant strain this year, A/Fujian/411/2002, wasn't isolated in time for the vaccine makers to include into their batch.

According to most Public Health Departments, around 70-80% of the flu this year is from the Type A Fujian variant, and the rest are mostly A/Panama and B/Hong Kong (included in the flu shot).

However, since the A/Fujian strain is a variant of the A/Panama strain, there might be some cross-coverage from the flu shot. So if you had the flu shot and catch the A/Fujian strain, your immune systems will probably react faster and the symptoms will be milder compare to those w/o the flu shot.

And if you talk to someone who has the flu, you will know how precious "milder symptoms and shorter duration" will sound to them 🙂

since you volunteer in a hospital, especially in an emergency room where you're likely to see more flu cases, i'd say definitly get one. even if you don't, it's always a good thing to have. think about it this way too. if you get the flu from someone else, would you really want to bring it into a hospital where some patients already have a weakened immune system?

CNN reported that the flu vaccine made for this year was identical to the one they made lastyear. Considering that the majority of flu is the Fujian, and all of the flu shortages, don't worry too much if you can't find it. It's pretty late in the season to get it, although if you can and didn't lastyear, definitely do. But, they didn't make as much this year because lastyear's demand was so low. I know here in Illinois, even the Health Departments are completely out. I wish you luck.

thank you guys.... i think i am doing to get it.

I got it...and it made me feel like crap....never gonna get it again...the flu isnt so bad...

If you really think this, I can guarantee you that you've never actually had Influenza A. (Maybe some bad colds or flu B, but definitely not flu A)

whats the difference btw influenza A and B?
i'm assuming A is more virulent, but are they just more virulent strains or are there different versions of the strains?

as you can see, i'm not quite clear on influenza, but i want to learn...

The flu shot can give you adult-onset autism.

Ummm. Risk vs. benefit. The flu has killed several people this year, how many have developed adult-onset autism? The naturopathic thread is on a different channel.

Ive heard this before, but Ive never seen any literature on it. Could you give me a link to a Journal article on it? Id like to see it.
Ive seen lit on Guillan-Barre syndrome, but it was poorly researched and actual risk was increased 1:1,000,000 persons vaccinated, and this was only shown sometimes.

You've heard of this before? You and Tbonez are making me start to think I'm taking crazy pills. Adult-onset autism? Adult-onset? Maybe I should have said "the flu shot can give you a big, green, floppy dong, even if you're a woman."

I thought the theory on vaccines leading to autism in children dealt with thimerosol as a preservative. The evidence wasnt conclusive either way, but they got rid of it anyway.

If you dont have any luck with flu shots, you can always try Zinc-containing nasal spray (I believe Zicam makes one) or the tablets that taste like coins.

Yes, this is correct. The epidemiology once seemed to support the thesis that vaccines were causing autism, but the data wasn't properly controlled.

Adult-onset autism as a condition, as far as I know, is a complete invention.

ah whatever...one problem with the media nowadays is that they report soem obscure things found by inconclusive studies or a single, unreplicated experiment.

Actually I heard somewhere that eating turkey can increase risk of cancer, heart disease, stroke, ADHD, Schizophrenia, and just about every other disease in the world...WHATEVER

Youd be surprised at what the general public thinks. Believe it or not, I had a patient tell me about that....or something very similar. Thought after hearing it here...maybe I was the one who was missing something.
A portion of the population feels that the government is out to get them....and vaccination are the way its done. I love conspiracy theorists.
