Does anyone have advice for flying with a suit? I'd prefer not to wear it in flight as I don't want it to get wrinkled. I purchased a cheap garment bag that I was hoping to carry on, but I'm not worried it won't meet the carry-on size requirements. It's 44" x 22" x 4". I've heard of people asking a stewardess to hang the suit in her closet, but this can be hit-or-miss. Any advice? Thanks!

I've actually worn my suit on the plane when headed to day trip interviews before. Alternatively, you can do the Hollywood jeans and sport-coat thing. Either way, just carry the jacket folded gently on your lap. No worries.

As Ferris Bueller says, "see what a finnski can do to a person's attitude?"

Trifold with a little tissue paper. You can carry a suit an an extra shirt and underwear, toilet stuff, and it is the same size as a small carry-on. Follow the Up In The Air dictum: no Dopp kit, use Ziploc bags.

It depends on where you're sitting, I usually wear a jacket when I'm sitting up front, there usually is enough space in the overhead, are you flying FC or cattle call?

Definitely not flying first class. The interview process is going to be outrageously expensive as it is!

I've never yet had anyone query the size of a carry-on, and an airline which didn't allow suit-carriers as carry-ons might start to worry about a large loss of custom from the business classes. If you do get challenged, a soft bag like a suit carrier can usually be scrunched up to get it in the size-check things, as long as it hasn't been overpacked. Worse comes to worst, you just buy a new bag at the airport which does meet the size requirements - or beg a large plastic carrier from one of the airport shops if you are really feeling the pinch.

As to any wrinkles in the suit after packing, hanging it up overnight will usually sort most/all of that out. Hanging it up in a steamy bathroom can help. Also, many hotels will provide an iron and ironing board free of charge if you ask (never hurts to ask). If you do need to press the suit, don't have the iron too hot, use the iron on the inside of the suit only and put a thin cotton cover (a pillowcase works if you've nothing else) between the iron and the inside of the suit.

Mostly, this is a detail which it could be nice to get right to help your confidence. But I can't remember, in any of the many (non-MD) job interviews I've conducted, that I included suit wrinkles in the assessment.

A lot of times they will hang it up for you. If they don't let you carry it on, you can stick it in your suitecase for 1 minute and then take it out. haha
