Hello,

Throughout my life I have undergone a severe problem in focusing, which has ultimately sculpted my learning process into a self-taught education. By that, I mean I attend class and essentially space out. This occurs, not due to my lack of interest, but because my attention essentially vanishes. So now that I have YOUR attention, I was wondering if anyone has this same problem and has overcome this. This problem has translated into my MCAT studies in that I seem to miss several practice passages, not because I do not understand the material, but because I find it difficult to focus in on the passage and important information in question choices; and block out extraneous stimuli. You may say "slow down" when reading; however, I already read at a snail's pace in order to allow myself to actively focus in on every sentence, but a lot of times I find myself rereading the same sentence 3-4 times.

Any other stories/comments would be fantastic! Especially involving a light at the end of the tunnel.

Just to prevent posts stating the obvious, I have thought about making an appointment with my physician to diagnose this; however, I feel this is an overreaction.

While I don't have a severe focusing problems as you, I'm going to suggest you try the following.
The key is to engage your mind. Even I have trouble reading "boring" materials also.

1. Ask you read, take good notes by summarizing what you just read in 1-2 sentences on paper. You can't lose focus when you're actively doing something.

2. Take short but frequent breaks. After 30 minutes, I usually take a 2 min walking stretching break. If I want to take a slightly longer 5 minute break, I usually actively review what I read/learn in the last 3 minutes.

3. Try to walk around while studying via flashcards etc..I find that if you're moving, it's harder to lose focus vs. sitting for an extended amount of time.

Hope that helps.

I'm pretty much the same way. Just a suggestion. If you are prescribed any medications such as Adderall, Concerta, Vyvanse, you might want to try some practice tests without them. I know it sounds counter-intuitive but I was prescribed Adderall for the longest time. I was always the last one in class to finish exams and timing on the MCAT was a nightmare. Aderall seems to impair my working memory tremendously and makes critical thinking extremely difficult.
