I have always been quite fascinated with psychedelics but never really got into them. They are, for the most part, shunned by society and the government so I figured I wouldn't get anywhere in life with them. I didn't think there were any legitimate jobs or careers involving them.

Then I stumbled upon the work of Alexander Shulgin. I realized there are legitimate jobs involving psychedelics and its called psychopharmacology. Not only does Shulgin legally make and study their effects, he INVENTS and developes new ones (for possible therapeutic use)!

I would give anything in the world to do that for a living. Which brings me to the question that has me writing: What on earth do I have to do to legally conduct my own similar research and development? Shulgin has a phd in biochemistry, so I know that is a must, but what else?

Also, he's pretty old and he's had a couple strokes, the worlds gonna need someone like him to take his place. And by that I mean someone else that is willing to test their own unknown creations on themselves. And I am willing to do that. Of course he has his methods which I would adopt, but that's the only way to do that kind of research. Animal test won't work due to their inability to communicate and human testing is basically illegal. Except on yourself.

One thing I forgot to mention... Shulgin does his work in his own lab behind his house. I'm not sure but I feel like I wouldn't be able to do that this day and age due to the legalities. He's been doing it since the 60s so I can understand why they'd let him slide.

Anyway I'm looking to do what he does but it doesn't have to be in my backyard. Maybe working for maps? (www.maps.org)

If you're wondering if a PharmD will allow you to make (?) legal psychedelics then no you cannot make drugs with a PharmD

No, I'm wondering what I have to do to be able to make psychedelic drugs legally, for therapy or whatever medicinal values they may have.

So far I know a phd in biochemistry is needed and studies in psychopharmacology.

That and you would probably need to find a University(or something) to fund your research. So you would need to have plenty of research and have an intent as to why you are making psychedelic drugs. My biochemistry professor makes HIV medication at our university and he has a Bachelors in Chemistry, and MS in Chemistry and a PhD in Bioorganic Chemistry with four years of Postdoctoral and fellowship research....
