Don't give up - it can be done! I got in (just found out) with a 3.08 science gpa & a 3.23 overall. Had 3 mos of hospital volunteer work, and shadowed my brother in law once. No research. My MCAT was good, but nothing to do cartwheels over (31R). Of course, there is a ton more to my background (but nothing medical), but I thought the game was over with my grades. Trust me, if this is what you want to do, nothing else will substitute. All the best to everyone in this horrible, treacherous waiting game. It is 7:55am in Va, and I'm going to have a margarita!
Keep at it!!!

Jess

So where'd you get in? I don't think your GPA is all that bad....
Congratulations and best wishes to you!!!!

 Congratulations:clap:

Very nice, dude! This gives me hope, because my GPA is definitely "shady," as you put it.

I also wonder where you got accepted to.

Thanks, guys. I know I have appreciated anytime someone would post anything that gave me some hope (the "I have a 3.8gpa and a 37S MCAT will I make it?" posts did not do much for my confdence). So I was trying to return the favor by telling people more in my same situation that I got in with a pretty crappy application.

Ok, I applied to EVMS (waitlisted, top third 🙁 ) and accepted just yesterday to MCV. In retrospect, I should have applied to more schools...and I was already making plans to apply again.

Oh, and I'm not a URM.

Good luck. I gotta go get another Margarita, now.

Jessica

Jesbr, way to go, girl!!!!
You definitely give the rest of us hope and I appreciate you sharing your story!!! Out of curiousity, was in an outright acceptance or acceptance off a WL??
Congrats,
Spin😀

Thanks. It was an outright acceptance, and I did not expect it at all. I didn't even submit my application until late October, and I took the August MCAT. I really only applied this year to see what the process was like. My plan was to do a post-bacc (I am accepted into the one at EVMS - but I guess I can withdraw now) program, try to redeem my GPA a little bit, do more hospital stuff and apply again in 2004. I think things that made a difference were:
1. I really resonated with my interviewer - he was extremely personal...almost to the point of making me uncomfortable...I had to adjust my perspective during the interview...he wanted to know about me as a whole person (he asked me how my relationship with my parents had evolved over time and how it has molded me??? and every other interview question was just like that one).
2. I have some life experience (was in the Army, have a kid, have a hubby, previous accounting career).
3. Really spent time on the essays.
4. Repeated every pre-med class and earned straight A's (not that impressive considering they were mostly REPEATS).
5. The tiny bit of hospital work I did have I made the most of -- talked to patients, doctors, nurses (well...they mostly just wanted to talk about their families, but were nice anyway).
6. Never anywhere in person or writing did I assign the blame for my yucky grades to anyone but me and my own immaturity and laziness. And nobody ever even asked about my grades.

Then again, I suspect that none of the above made any difference whatsoever and somebody just hit the wrong button. But I'll take it anyway.

Good luck guys...God knows if I can do it, anybody can.

Jess,

Big CONGRATS to you and hail to all the under-dogs that worked hard to become top-dogs. 😀

Congrats and must say..your post was definitely encouraging.

I am curious, when they calculate Science/Non-science GPA, do they take Post-Bacc courses into account too? Or is it purely undergraduate GPA?

I can't wait till I get to the point of taking MCAT and applying to med school. If I do get admitted, that would be the happiest day of my life (okay, second happiest day).

Best wishes to you. Hope you do well in Med school.

Shahab

Congrats!

Thanks for giving us such positive attitude and hope toward our goal. That matters a lot.

best

congratulations! my gpa also wasn't stellar, and I got a B and a C in two semesters of organic chemistry. So much for med schools only looking at your o-chem grades 🙄

Yeah, I was handed 2 Cs in both of my O. Chem class and 1 C in Cal I during undergrad. I made up for them by acing my Adv. Biochem classes and nobody during the interviews even talks about my grades.

jess,

first of all, CONGRATULATIONS  on the acceptance. don't get too drunk on the margaritas now...😉

just wanted to say that your post has seriously given me some hope without a doubt. i know that i'll still face MANY challenges and low points but i'am certainly ready to forward with this whole application thing. i myself will be taking the august mcats so your post was an EXTRA + for me.

all the best and once again...congratulations..
🙂

Hey, Jesbr, can I ask how you addressed your stats in your personal statement? I'm in a similar boat (low-ish undergrad grades, army, life experience) and am wondering how to take responsiblity for my bad grades while making it clear it won't happen again (I've got a grad program to back it up). I'd really appreciate any suggestions... And congratulations on your acceptance!

Hi Guys - thanks for all the congrats. It is so nice to be able to enjoy goofing off on SDN w/out stressing out. Louren - I'm going to email you a copy of my personal statement.
Jess
