Could you please post an everyday type of schedule that you go through as a first or second year? For ex. Class at 8-12, lab 1-3 study/workout..... I have this for the schools I have interviewed at and know KCUMBs pretty well, but I'd like some feedback on DMU, I have an interview on the 20th. Thanks !

I am also very interested in this. Maybe we could get a better response in the allopathic forum?

What other schools do you have this info for, DiverDoc? Would you mind sharing?

Thanks

I am an MS I so I can only speak for the first years. We basically are in class everyday from at least 8-12. Two times a week there is anatomy lab that is two hours and is in the after noon most times (there are a couple of morning anatomy labs). However, there are some days where you are in class straight from 8-4. On the other hand, there are days where you are in class from 8-10. It all depends on the week. I like not having the high school/college everyday set schedule. Also, there is no enforced attendance policy. If you don't want to go, then don't go. Hope this helps. Good luck with your interview on the 20th; I'm one of the people talking to the prospectives before the interview so maybe I'll run into ya! PM me if anyone has any individual questions. I'd be more than happy to help.

I am an MSI:

8-12pm class pretty much everyday with a break at 12-1pm. (Lunch/club meetings)

2-4 pm twice a week for OMM Lab and Anatomy Lab

after class I "try" to study but I usually end up working out or watching tv or sleeping...then I study at night...something like 6-12am or 7-12am with numerous breaks in between for eating or watching some show I like...

I usually wake up at 7am but often times I woke up at 6 am to go running for an hour at the gym or a park nearby.

and when there is an exam, all those "breaks" and "work-out" times usually go out the window about two days before the exam.

It's different for everybody but this way works for me..so far I am doing just fine in all my classes.

Haha thanks. I hardly have time to enjoy much of anything. After my interviews I am playing catch up in my Comparative Anatomy class/genetics/research/history. LOL, I think im gonna work real hard for 1.5 months get a few good exams under my belt and enjoy life a little bit before the storm next year.

Doubt it. DMU is an osteopathic school.

Although it might be helpful to post it in the osteopathic med forum.

Oh my, I can't believe I typed allopathic. I meant osteopathic......

going on 4 hours of sleep.

sorry guys.

I'm sorry but unless you have a huge test the next day there's absolutely no reason you can't get at least 6 hours a night in med school.

I think you can definately get 7-8 every night if you study properly.

LOL I think I am the only undergrad on SDN that studies 4-5 hrs a day. In a good way I guess medical school wont be as big of a shock to me as others. 😎 I try to get about 6-7hrs a night, otherwise my brain is useless after lunch.

I graduated from undergrad last year, and I definately studied basically all day when I wasnt in class. Usually my schedule consisted of classes all day, a bit of studying during lunch (so about an hour or 2), then meetings and dinner in the evening, and then studying til midnight when the library closed, and then usually we transferred to the campus center (was open 24 hours) for another couple of hours. So I guess I studied about 6-8 hours every day, and got about 6 hours of sleep. If med school is the same, then I'm expecting to pre-read the material before the professor teaches it so you can better understand. Then read over notes after class/study later.

I dont really know how people can make the transition into med school if they havent had to kill themselves in undergrad. Haha, or maybe I'm just a dork and studied too much.

Good to know theres other crazy study buddies out there too!!😍

You really need to get adequate sleep in med school. I get 7-8 hours a night and do fine. I'd rather be well rested and have my wits about me for an exam than stay up 4 more hours trying to cram a few more facts into my head.

err. im not in med school. just graduated davis. and im not busy studying or anything like that, so my lack of sleep isnt due being busy. i just cant fall asleep or stay alseep for that long. sleeping disorder perhaps?

You guys just started, wait until the butt ramming begins in November/December then come talk to me about your "sleep cycles."

Typical day (second year DMU): Up at 6 (gym), an hour of BRS physio (not every day, some times I slack off on this one), MP3s/note condensation until finished. Lunch at 12, any required labs after that, finish any of the lectures I didn't get to in the morning.

The above is on a non-testing day and with no required classes to attend. Sometimes I slack off on the gym and don't get up until 10 or can't fall asleep until..well ever. However, the above is my schedule for 80% of the time.

In the beginning of the year it is easier to develop a pretty nice schedule where you can go to the gym, have fun, watch tv and procrastinate as much as you want. However, when the last two months roll around, they decide to cram as many tests down your throat as possible. During this time, your sleep goes to hell and you skip the gym 9 times out of 10.

For the current students:

What are the international opportunities (electives, community service, rotations)?

I have looked on the website but cannot find a satisfactory description.

Thanks!!!🙂

I believe sleeping disruptions, particularly waking up and not being able to go back to sleep, can be a symptom of depression.

yup, but it's not a criterial one and it's only a depressive symptom if it's a change from baseline (at least that's what I learned)
