hey guys....i am really scared about something that I am hoping my fellow SDNers can not only sympathize but offer some good advice....

i am applying to both IM and EM... I REALLY like both fields for different reasons and see myself doing one or the other as a life long career....

the thing which is tricky is that due to my geographical limitation (family, etc.), I have applied to both fields WITHIN THE SAME HOSPITAL!!!

Anyone out there in a similar situation...what should I do...for those in a similar situation, what are you planning to do/say in terms of interviews...

(input from PDs and/or current residents who had similar situation would be TRULY AND GREATLY appreciated!!!)

I'm sure you already know about the combined IM/EM programs. Don't know if they'd fit your geographical limitations tho. There are only a few. But sounds like they would be the perfect kind of program for you!

I applied in both fields several years ago and then made up my mind by ranking all the EM programs first on my match list.

My Dean's office knew what I was doing since I sent different letters to each program. However, I only applied to EM and IM at the same institution in one case. I was a bit worried about running into someone who would recognize me from my first visit there while on my second visit. Turns out I needn't have worried. At that point the Brigham's IM offices were on one of the main floors of the hospital and the EM offices were in some sub-basement so obscure even the maintenance guys couldn't find it.

If you are applying to both EM and IM at your home institution I think its pretty likely that someone will figure it out. It might be easier to be upfront about it.

Even if you have geographic restrictions you must be applying to more than one hospital. Putting all your hopes on a single hospital is pretty risky.
