So Im still waitlisted at my top choice, but accepted at my 2nd choice. I still really want to go to the school im waitlisted at but i have no idea whats gonna happen.
When should i start looking into signing leases at the school where im accepted? What happens if i sign a lease near 2nd choice school and then my top choice accepts me?

late july. Depends on the terms of the lease too...if you just lose a few hundred dollars of a security deposit by breaking it, then I wouldn't have a problem signing it earlier, but if you are obligated to pay 3 months rent or something if you cancel, then I'd wait till last minute

ok so is late july the common consensus?

Depends on a lot of things:
When does the school you're accepted start?
When does the school you're waitlisted at start?
Where are you living now and how far is from where you will be attending school?
How picky are you about roomates and how difficult is housing at your new location?

All these things would factor in for me if I was making that decision.

both schools start first week of august. school im accepted at is an hour away from where i live, waitlisted school is on the opposite side of the country. i already have potential roomates and potential apartment at accepted school, but these are not set in stone. but like i said if waitlisted school takes me i really want to go there.

If I were you I would wait until the last possible minute then. You could always move in the day before orientation and get settled during orientation/the first week of school. Med school isn't as bad as they make it out to be.

The issue is just that your potential roommates/apartment probably wont be willing to wait that long so you may end up in a less than ideal situation in that case. And if housing is a pain where you're going then thats tougher.

Lets face it, you can't count on getting off the waitlist. But you have to decide if there is anything you value that you would lose by waiting until the last minute (eg. security of knowing where you'll live, good roommates, etc)

I think most waitlist movement happens in late May to early June. If you haven't heard back by then, don't hold your breath.

I currently live in the same city as my waitlisted school, so if I get in there I don't need to look for an apartment or move or anything. The school I'm accepted at is 600 miles away. Both schools are excellent, and I think I'll be very happy at either. Ultimately, staying at the waitlisted school would mean staying close to friends and family, as well being able to continue with the research I'm doing now, which is why I'm still hoping I come off the waitlist.

I think my plan is to start looking for a place at my accepted school in mid June. When I find a place I like and sign the lease, that will be my decision. Personally, I'm not willing to throw my life into total disarray over some last minute change of heart from a med school.

I actually feel kind of bad about the fact that I've accepted this spot officially now, but am still working on other options. I know that it isn't unethical or dishonest. I know this is how the system works. I know that every school has a waitlist, and that when they accept a student from the waitlist the expectation is that the student will probably have to drop another acceptance to switch. I still feel a little unsavory, though.

I'll be glad when this is all settled.

this is my feeling as well.

I'm in the same boat as OP. In at my second choice, but waitlisted at choice number one. The chances of getting in off the WL after July 1 are tiny. So I would think that by then it's pretty safe to just find a place.

But yeah, it also depends on how badly you want #1. For me, I don't want it badly enough to wait until orientation at my #2 to find a place.

Depends on the school. In last year's threads some schools didn't move until after June.

this reminded me a lot of a thread i saw a couple weeks back, lawdoc gives a good answer

so, in the event that you look for a place, asking your landlord about an opt-out clause might be a good route. it depends a lot on the availability of housing in the area you're looking.
