For those who didn't match into gas: apply again?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
if you don't match the first time around, do you apply again as a PGY-2? how hard is it?

You would probably want to reapply during your PGY-1 year. How hard is it depends. If you don't do anything different, there's no reason to expect different results. However, if you work on weak areas of your application, you might be able to improve your chances. Talk to PDs of programs you already applied to about which areas you need to work on. You can also look for spots outside of the match. Hopefully your intern year will be done at an institution which has an anesthesia program. Make yourself and your intentions known to the higher ups of that program.

I don't know what state you're planning on practicing in, and if that state requires the DO intern year, perhaps someone else could comment on how that might affect the process.

Can't you take a hint? "Man, screw anesthesiology!" is what I'd be saying if I was in your shoes.

If you didn't get a spot this year, don't waste your time re-applying to gas programs next year.

Finish your internship year, then go into PM&R.

When you're done, if you still want to do interventional stuff, you can easily get into a pain fellowship from PM&R. Either way, you'll have a much sweeter life. And, the pay ain't bad for the hours worked either.

If I had it to do all over again, this is what I would've done. But, I'm sure as hell not doing another residency.

I wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment. If I didn't match a [relatively competitive] specialty the first time around, there isn't much I can do differently during my intern year to make me a shinier candidate. On the other hand, I have seen people pursue IM or PM&R for a handful of years, excel, and then successfully match into anesthesia residency.

Now those are people who *really* want to do anesthesia.

You sound unhappy and dissatisfied. How unfortunate.

Copro,

I'm a med student and I value your input so I just want to clarify this statement to make sure I understand where you're coming from...

Are you saying that in the OP's position you wouldn't bother reapplying to anesthesiology? Or are you saying that knowing what you know now, anesthesiology is not the way to go (in general) given the current and anticipated climate in the field?

If you were choosing your specialty right NOW, but you had the perspective and experience you have now... what would you choose? PM&R? Something else? Why?

Would any of the other luminaries chime in? Jet... Arch... Noyac?

I appreciate what everyone on this board has to say. UNBELIEVABLE resource. Thanks.

Gas or bust, man. Gas or bust.

PM&R is a close second, though.
