kai so im in high school and im going to the university of alberta in the fall 2011,
to complete my perquisites in the faculty of science. Is it a good idea to do it ALL IN ONE YEAR.. with a full academic course load for a freshman coming into university ? or is it better to do it within 2 years and then apply to pharmacy? What im saying is... i dont know if doing it all in one year will be overwhelming or not and if it can be done? do the majority of people do it in one year? and in order for me to apply to the facility of pharmacy the required min gpa is 3.5 /4.

Yay UofA (i heart edmonton!)

Since you will be a freshman, I would HIGHLY advise that you do not do everything in one year. Why? b/c you'll go crazy.

You have to keep in mind, your freshman year has alot more going on than just school. it is a very distracting year between new people, new classes, maybe a new city. I'm not saying that partying will be the death of you, thats not even the half of it, but you dont want to rush this year, get a poor GPA and be kicking yourself later. Take your time.

Hey crystal. I'm a 4th yr immunology kid at the U of A who planned on doing pharm way back when so I can help out.

I know a lot of students who did it all in year 1 because thats what they thought was normal. Personally, I did my prereq's over the course of 2 years, just because as mentioned above maintaining a 3.5 in first year classes definitely isn't as easy as you think (I sure as heck just squeeked over a 3.5 in first year and I had to bust my butt second term after getting an attitudinal readjustment after first). I talked exhaustively with a prepharm advisor and she told me they don't care nor evaluate you different based on whether you complete your prereqs in 1, 2 or 4 years.

If you have any questions about the U of A or U of A pharm feel free to shoot me a PM. If you haven't had a sibling go there already I know some stuff can be pretty confusing (such as when to take Chem 261/263 - I'm a bitter old man because of this)

WOW thanks for the advice you guys = )
yeah i was thinking... doing it all IN ONE YEAR.. was going to be over whelming for me >.> and i also need a 3.5^ gpa too.

Hey thumbz, so first year with the full course load went horrible with u? and, did u eventually get into pharm school? and... i was thinking... of either taking chem 164( which is only for students who got 90%^ in chem 30) and chem 263 or... CHEM 261 and 263? Im scared that if i take chem 164.. the competition in there would be tough and im wondering if that'll lower my overall gpa for admission?

We actually have quite a bit of students in our class that got in after only 1 yr (c/o 2013). It really depends on how disciplined you are in your studies. I shared a room with an awful room mate in lister and he screwed up my 1st yr really bad... but I think if I had good living arrangements I could've done it in 1 yr.
