Foreign Doctors Training Changes

Hi,

I'm an international applicant for undergraduate entry into UK medical schools. With the recent changes in mind, I'd like to ask whether doctors trained in UK medical schools will be affected by the new law? I mean if I study for six years in a UK medical school, will I also be banned from training?

I think you need to have a EU citizenship to enter post grad training although you went to a UK Medical school.

Currently, you are permitted to complete your Foundation Years (1&2) to get GMC registration and are then not eligible for further training.

Nobody knows what will happen in 6-7 years time when you reach that stage.

At the moment, you could be relatively "guaranteed" training in your Foundation Years. However, after that you may find it difficult to advance. Herein lies the problem ...why work as a slave for two years when you might have to re-do it somewhere else if you aren't able to advance afterwards?

It changes every few years these days, but at the moment the new laws apply principally to EU doctors. Its basically no longer legal for the NHS to selectively prefer British doctors. In 5-10 years time the 1997-2001 increase in medical school places (from 5000 a year to 10,000) will start to bite and there will be LOTS more british doctors fighting for basically the same number of jobs, theres no garuntee there will be free slots and typically the people who lost out first in those situations are the foriegn non-EU chaps.
