Question for y'all, is foreign language experience valuable? I mean, I understand that it makes you different and sets you apart from other applicants, but are there certain programs that look more favorably on it than others?

For reference I'm your average little American white boy but speak fluent Portuguese and Spanish with proficiency in Italian.

I would think so. It means you can reach a larger patient base, and communicate with patients that have a difficulty with English.

Yes. Definitely bring it up. Foreign language is actually the angle I go with in my interviews.

That's insanely valuable. Spanish will help a ton- make sure to mention that you're fluent!

They are probably going to be more impressed with the fact that you are an "average little American white boy" who actually speaks a foreign language.

I've had it work out for me several times. Either the patient is struggling to convey their problems or issues in English, and I coincidently speak their native tongue, or we draw on our shared experiences due to our ancestry and connect.

Either way being fluent in another language is very valuable in any field where you interact with others.
