So I'm sending in applications now and I see VMCAS has schools in Canada, Scotland, Dublin, and Australia. I've heard of people going through Scotland. But I never hear anything about Canada, Australia, etc. Why is that? Any info is greatly appreciated.

Start looking around on SDN. 😉 There's quite a large contingent of Americans attending the Atlantic Veterinary College. Almost a third of our class is Americans, actually. To my knowledge, only 2 of the Canadian schools accept Internationals - AVC and OVC. SocialStigma is a Canadian at OVC and might be able to give some more insight into the International population there. I think there's a few SDNers at Melbourne too (but their names escape me - I can picture the avatar, but not the name, how ridiculous is that?). Sunshinevet comes to mind, but I'm not sure where she/he is originally from.

Like I said, depends on the school. There's only 5 schools in Canada, only two of which accept Internationals. But you'll also see students on SDN at St George's, Ross, RVC, Edinburgh, Dublin, etc. If you hang around SDN in the coming months, you'll see a lot of people applying and going to international schools.

Hey Hey! I'm not international but I am at Murdoch in Australia. Nexx on here is also at murdoch but is a fifth year, and Otakuvet? went to murdoch but I havent seen her around much since she came (on SDN that is).

I think the main reason people don't come to Australian schools more is competition and money. Around 1/3 of my class are Nth Americans - Americans or Canadians, but its costing each of them around $200,000 in tuition ALONE. Add on living expenses and that is a LOT of money!!!

The accredited schools here are Murdoch (WOOO!!! WE WERE THE FIRST!!!) Melbourne, Sydney and UQ(i think). Massey in NZ is also AVMA accredited. They are all first class schools that will give you a veterinary education equal or better to what you'll find in the US.

But yeah, for most people, I think its mostly about staying in your home country, and the money. SO MUCH MONEY!!!

At OVC there is a reserved amount of seats for international students- this includes Americans!

And I'm a Canadian in Australia wanting to go to an Australian vet school- and what sunshinevet said is a huge part of the reason why there is a smaller population of Canadians and Americans going to Aussie schools. This year I believe the cost of tuition was about $46 000 per year (for 5 years), and housing would cost around $200-$300 per week. Also, food is typically a lot more expensive in Australia then what you would expect to pay in North America.

Its not only Aussie schools that are expensive, its ALL international schools- as an international student you pay outrageous fees, but thats the way it goes!

Also- UQ isn't accredited yet, but I think they're close.

I think it's just underrepresented both in the real world and on SDN. I wouldn't have even known about AVC if it were for digging around on SDN, but I'd heard of the big name Carribean schools almost from the start. There are roughly 20 American students (myself included) in each AVC class, though, so we're definitely here!
