"Formal Research Experience"?

• Research Experience (Limit of Five): Formal research programs, including those sponsored by universities.

I am finding the AADSAS instructions slightly confusing. What constitutes a "formal research program"?

Does this have to be as formal as a publication or citation in a peer reviewed journal? What about working as a research assistant, or getting academic credit for independent study projects? What about non-science research?
