So as the title of this thread states, I'm a mechanical engineer (worked for 2.5 years) who has decided to quit my job to take health prerequisites and pursue dental school. The dentist that my dad is going to for implants works at my university and offered to pass my resume along for any research or work opportunities that might be available for a graduate non-degree like myself.

So I guess my main question here is, what do I do with all my previous engineering work (or any other unrelated) experience? If I dump it, I'll pretty much only be left with my university's pre-dental club. Should I just leave it in this format for now and discuss it in the cover letter? Not really sure what to do here....

discuss it in your personal statement and also you will have a place to list it in the AADSAS application. I have a bachelors in engineering and am currently working as an engineer but got accepted about a month ago so I will be starting school in August. Ask me any questions you may have and I'll try to help the best that I can.

In all interviews, my engineering work experience seemed to be a big advantage.

Remember that most applicants are in their 4th year of undergrad, or graduated recently and most likely have no work experience. I would highlight your work experience in your personal statement and relate it to dentistry (look up dmdstudent .com :http://www.dmdstudent.com/2007/04/16/aadsas-personal-essay-for-dental-school/).

thanks for the replies. i have also heard that being an engineer will be an advantage for me as an applicant.

so with the personal statement, that's more for the dental school application process though right? he asked me to send him a resume and cover letter.

so on my resume should i just cut out most of the bulk and keep the core engineering stuff in there then start tacking on stuff i'm doing towards dental?

I meant to say that applicants with engineering background are looked at positively. Obviously, the main selection criteria for majority of schools is gpa/dat.

I think you should leave the work experience 👍. This shows your work ethic. If you wanted to shorten it to make room for other stuff on your resume then that would be ok but I would not completely take it off.

I think you had a good idea: leave as much of information as you can from your previous work experience and include everything that yo did dental related. Also you can list the courses you took or currently taking relating to science (so people understands that you are in the direction of dentistry). If you have too much info then cut things out like engineering stuff that is completely unrelated.

Good luck!!
