My friend was in 3 porn "films" when she was young and stupid and money hungry. How could this affect her getting into med school, residency, relationships with peers/patients, etc

I think your "friend" should change her name and her hair color, before applying to medical school.

Not joking -- a similar situation came up in the hospital where I work. Someone googled the name of someone else, and all this crazy **** was unearthed. It spread like wild fire.

I think that depends on the quality of the films. :corny:

But seriously, she should just avoid ever talking about it. If it comes up, she should simply treat it like it's a normal thing that everyone does (it's not, but I think that's the best option). As her friend, I would make certain I never mentioned it to anyone. That's the kind of thing that people don't forget about someone once they learn it, and gossip at hospitals can be pretty crazy.
 
If she can easily be traced to it, damaged, wrecked, and ruined, respectively.

Even if she ends up in school, a respectable residency, or running as a partner in professional practice, the idea that it could come back to haunt her or ruin her career will always be hanging over her head. High level academics or politics would be risky to enter, as people would look deeper into her background for such roles and possibly dig up her past.

The moral of the story is, for the love of God, if you plan on having a respectable career, don't do porn.

Also pics or it didn't happen.
 
If she had any sense at all she would have used a name like Sharon Cox or Dixie Normous. Problem solved.
 
How are you all assuming her real name was used in porn? Is anyone's real name EVER used in porn?

Yeah, hospital gossip is nuts. If a girl does some freaky **** in bed, everyone knows within a week, and no one ever forgets. And I work with literally thousands of people- I can't imagine how much worse it is in a small hospital.

If somebody turned out to be a porn star, I'd imagine everyone on staff would have all their movies downloaded by sunset. And every time she left a room full of guys, there'd be a bunch of laughing and talk about her pretty much forever.

There's a database of the real names, birthdays, etc of every adult film star that has legally filmed in the US. it's there to prove the actors are of age, but is often used to obliterate the careers of teachers and other professionals.
 
This thread reminds me of that one episode of Grey's anatomy where Alex tells everyone in the hospital about izzie's porn photos

You're right. Cinnamon or Candy is a way better name. Ironically I know of a set of twins with those real names that ended up being strippers.

Here's a few things to consider...

If she hopefully used a stage name, then she can sweep it under the rug. There are so many porn actors in both video and photo formats that unless someone is a porn addict and she was a huge star, that anyone would recognize her.

Also, if she changes her apperance, I highly doubt anyone who recognizes her would actually confront her about being a porn star. There are so many lookalikes around. Plus that's way too embarrassing to even consider doing.

No one will ever confront her about it. It'll just be what the guys talk about when she isn't around, generally. Like, we all know, say, X nurse from MICU did some things that were taken straight out of the There's Something About Mary playbook, but we don't say it to her face. We're just like, "I still can't believe she did X with Y." You never look at a person the same way again. Man, when she got promoted, the jokes that went around about how she earned it were terrible.

Another lesson you might want to consider is not sleeping around at the hospital. If a breakup happens (or often even before) the guy can end up telling everything to all the other guys on staff in an effort to 1) limit your dating choices and 2) to wreck your rep. It's in poor taste but happens all the time. I feel bad for the girls, honestly, it's usually nurses that put out trying to land an up and coming resident, and it only ends well maybe a tenth of the time.

Remember when there was a media firestorm about retired porn star Sasha Grey volunteering to read to children at an Elementary school?

Imagine the firestorm...if the media got a hold of a "'former porn star' Treats children at Seattle Grace Children's Hospital" storyline.

The med school would find a way to make the student disappear under the guise of professionalism...

I was thinking post-med school. In med school, yeah, she'd be eliminated due to character issues.
 
Interesting responses(from the more mature posters). There really doesn't seem to be a way to find someone's porn career through their real name though, so I don't see how it could ever get out.
 
Unfortunately we live in a culture that can be damming to women who engage in sexual activities that can be construed as promiscuous. Even if your not a sex worker, having any online pictures or films that are nude can have seriously bad consquences.

She should have never used her real name. Hopefully she doesn't have any tattoos, scars or birth marks that would identify her in the films. She could do her best to get the films taken down. If it ever got exposed I would resort to the Shaggy defense.
 
Med school is generally run by pretty uptight people. There was an issue I heard about where someone was in porn before school and the school accepted the person and then found out and wanted the person to apologize or something like that. I don't know what happened in the end but I thought it was silly to try and get them to apologize for something that didn't harm anyone and they didn't misrepresent as there is no "were you ever in porn" box to check on an application. I would assume if your friends application is not totally stellar they won't be admitted if admissions finds out. But there is really no reason admissions needs to find out. Writing it on the app as a "learning experience" or something would be completely insane. However the average person reacts when they find out your friend was in porn will be how patients/peers would react.

Character issues could include anything from making racist comments on the internet to starring in porn. Medicine is a very conservative institution, and, if you've got skeletons or wild opinions, you basically have to keep them to yourself or risk being a faculty target.

Let me say that I am not among the guys who is in the rumor camp, nor do I care what a woman does with her own life. I was just trying to make you very aware that those you work with and alongside will pass judgement on you, because that's what people do. I don't say a word while they're doing their thing- I'm usually off in a corner studying while they talk about stuff, personally I couldn't care less. They're just guys that think of everything in terms of sex. Though I must say it IS hard to look at some of the girls on staff in the same way. I honestly wish I didn't know any of this lol.

Also, once word gets out that maybe a girl was in a film, it's easy to prove it. Actor information isn't stored in a database (the only database was a medical one, that was leaked and can now easily be accessed online, but it only goes up to 2011), but its stored in a file it turns out. And title 18 does not guarantee confidentiality, and only the biggest companies will not be willing to bargain for information about their performers. So make sure word never, ever gets out.

I'm being harsh in my delivery because I am just trying to make it pretty clear that the consequences for her future can be quite serious and long lasting, not because I feel this way personally. I've got a soft spot for the industry. They're all a bunch of misunderstood normal people that happen to have an unusual job, basically. But there's some things you just don't do if you want to be a professional later in life, and one of those things is being in porn.
 
I recall the same thing happened to Gauge. After her porn career ended, she went back to school and became a surgical tech, but no one would hire her because of her past.

She's doing porn again... so I've heard.

Do you really think that standard medical school/residency application procedure involves comparing the student names to the porn database? Your friend is fine as long as a) she didn't use her real name when in the videos b) she keeps her mouth shut about being in the videos c) when you google her real name it doesn't link to the videos.

My point wasn't that it will. My point is that it is a specter that will hang over her career for the rest of her life that she must ensure never sees the light of day, because if it does, it could limit her in the future significantly.
 
This reminds me of the thread in allo about the female med student that had posted a bunch of nudes online. The girl eventually found the thread and posted in it. Great thread.

Probably embarrassing for the young lady, but not career-lethal. There's a world class scientist at NIH who got her start as a topless waitress (either during her UG days, or right after). She asked some customers one day what they did, they replied that they did research at NIH.

She thought that was really interesting, then went and got her PhD.
