As a former derm res from a supposedly "top 5" program, glad to answer any questions anyone has about the application process. It was heck for me as well, glad the whole business is over now.

Not sure if this is also OK on this site - this isn't an ad, but as a former res I have the following books at 1/2 retail, brand new, for $30; (mail me at [email protected] if you're interested). If it's not OK, would be glad to make it up by dispensing advice =)

1. Dermatology: An Illustrated Colour Text [Paperback] by Gawkrodger, David
2. Color Atlas of Dermatology by White, Gary M.

you say you go to a "supposedly top 5" program. Where can reasonable rankings be found. I am interested to know.

Are we all referring to Jashin Wu's paper in DOJ?
1. u pen
2. ucsf
3. nyu
4.
5. michigan
ect,ect

is there another ranking list?

thanks for your offer to help/give advice

I would put Mayo AZ or Rochester in that 4 hole. Barnes has got to be up there too.

I was going to say that's awfully gruff but hey, that is his/her username

call me scum, scumbag, scumbagderm, whatever you like.

I got the idea from dermboard. Some guy said that all derm applicants were scumbags. I needed a username so why not?

Hello formerdermres,

Thank you for offering to help.

Would you have any tips on how to interview well? I am about to go on my first interview in January.

Is there anything that you think you personally would like to hear from or see in an applicant when interviewing him/her?

Would appreciate your input very much!

even if i didn't get my books sold =)

1. reading websites to know a bit about your interviewers is a good idea. you have no idea how egotistical academics are. they could be the puva specialist of the guam cosmotology junior college, but if you say hey that was a great paper in jid i saw last week was that you, they will ACTUALLY BELIEVE it means you are brilliant enough to know their work. it's devastating and someday a good tv show will be made using this detail.

2. go to the most mature professional you know (hopefully not a medical student) and give them your answers to the top 5 interview questions (why do you want to be a derm etc). tell them you want the brutal hard painful truth. interviewers are looking for you to show you can put your life in a bigger context, and if you can't do it really well, at this point you need outside help.

3. make a sincere effort with the admins and residents. i know it's exhausting, but be considerate and curious. some of the schmucks that came into our program from blue chip programs and acted like total bored heels during dinner made me want to say - that plane fare was wasted. and indeed, it was.
