What is the usual time period between the end of fourth year (commencement) and the start of intern year? I'd like to plan a nice vacation during this time.

Also, do people take vacation during the actual fourth year, prior to commencement?

approximate dates

May 3-18th - last rotation, most people took the "preparing for internship" class which was like 8-noon with a very easy exam. The 19th was BLS CPR, mandatory graduation was on the 21st.

First intern responsibility was ACLS on June 23-24th or so, then a week of orientation (all day, every day), then into the fire.

didn't take any M4 vacations really, since I had a kid during my months off, and interviews filled up the rest.

Note: myself and many of my classmates are having to report mid-June (read: many on either June 11th or June 18th) for their respective programs. Most of it is ACLS training/orientation/etc. Most of my friend have recently been heard repeating "I can't believe I actually have to report two weeks into June . . . everyone always talks about July 1."

My point is, don't "bank" on having all/most of June free as they apparently did.

I will be going to a school on the quarter system. Looks like there wont be any time off since grad is in June

This was my experience this year:

End of 4th year rotations - May 18th
Commencement - May 21st
Start of intern year - June 13th

Vacations taken during 4th year - 3 weeks in Europe, 4 weeks in Belize (all after match day), several ski trips between interview season and match day

Most people in my class went abroad for vacation during 4th year because we are given 2, 4 week vacation blocks. On top of that, 4th year essentially becomes a vacation after interview season is over in February. The time between commencement and intern year is variable depending on your program and usually people take that time to move and get settled in.

I am doing a TY in Indiana. It's one of the few internships that allow you to start on June 1st (and have the June following intern year off!!) This is a pretty sweet option for me since we (my wife and THREE kids...im nuts) are moving several states away to continue residency....plus this will give us time to get medical student renters into our home🙂

It's obviously school dependent, but our MS4 year runs July-April, with only 7 months of rotations required. For me:

Last day of rotations: 3/23
Graduation: 5/12
Residency orientation: 6/18

So potentially, you could have plenty of time for vacation...if you can afford it after residency applications/interviews and moving costs if you're leaving for residency.

We get from May 24- July 1st (figure orientation in dependent on where you end up) for sure, then you schedule fourth year with 3 off months. I'll actually be done at Match.
