I spent yesterday and most of today working with one of the FM faculty at their clinic. It was a nice experience but it sure was busy. I think we saw ~60+ patients within the 8 hrs that I was shadowing them. Out in the real world, how common is this? Obviously each practice will be different (and that is one of the beauty's of FM), but in general is it going to have to be 6-7 patients every hour in order to get enough reimbursement?

Most of the folks I know see around 25 patients or so (+/- 5) in a typical 8-hour day. Here are a couple of relevant articles that you might find interesting:

That is a normal figure back in India where I attended clinic( sorry to digress from the US healthcare system). But not really for reimbursement but rather the volume.

Kent thanks for those interesting articles. I guess it is easier for a FP in an academic setting/one who uses PA's to see more patients. You just have the medical student do the CC, HPI, and physical and then come in to wrap things up. I just hope that when I am out on my own that I can still have a good practice seeing only 20-25 patients a day.

I've done locums work in approximately 20 different practices and the average patient volume is 20 to 30 patients per day. Some of the acute care offices were a little higher, especially during flu season; a couple of practices made ends meet with 15-20 patients per day.
