Hey, I'm a 4th year and need to make up my damn mind. I narrowed it down to Peds vs FP. I've got many different reasons for wanting to do both and only a few reasons for not wanting to do both. Why should I or shouldn't i do one or the other?

Then, I think why don't I just do pathology and make my life easier. Do I really want to wake up at 4am or stay up all night long just because I have this silly idea that I want to be a doctor that treats people? Well, anywho, I guess it's between FP and peds.

HELP!!!!

Well, do you want to treat only kids all the time, or have a variety of patients?

I've worked with a couple FP docs who concentrate on peds patients but see some adults from time to time for variety. FP sounds like it offers a little more flexibility.

What kind of patients would you rather see?

If you wanna specialize down the road, peds is more flexible.

Pay/hours are similar.

If they are close in your mind then I suggest that you go with your gut feeling. As previously mentioned, you can go into FP but later on if you decide that you just wanna see kids then you can build your practice to accomodate that.

I would vote for path though. 😀

Become the nerd you were born to be! 😀

If you're a FP you can elect to see a bunch of Peds patients without any changes. In fact, you could also elect to do OB. If you change your mind and want to do more adults and geriatrics, so be it.

If you're in Peds it would probably be difficult to adjust your practice to be more like an FP.

If you want to see kids mostly I would recommend Peds as many parents prefer to take their kids to a pediatrician (as I would). If you like seeing patients of all ages and following them throughout their life, go with FP. Also, take into account where you want to live. If you want to live in a small town FP is great, in larger cities parents are definitely going to take their kids to Pediatricians first. Also remember you can always specialize if you get tired of general peds but there's not a lot of opportunities for fellowships with FP. And forget Path, you obviously are someone who wants to see people.

Is med-peds not on your radar? Seems like the perfect solution to me except you'd lose out on some OB, and ortho-type issues.

I thought about med-peds, but the military doesn't offer that, and I took the scholarship for that. Anywho, thanks for the replies. I've taken most of that into account. I am from a rural area and I think it basically comes down to if I want to go back to a rural area or stay in large cities. But I will be happy with either, I believe, so I will just pick one.

Good luck with your decision, and thanks for serving the country. 👍
