Frat in Extracurricular section

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
In my opinion, being in a fraternity shows that you are a well-rounded person with interests besides simply academic studies. In addition, many fraternity/sorority members that I know are extremely dedicated to their schoolwork (work hard, play hard) Also did you hold any positions in your house? (especially prez, vp, or social chair) By performing these positions you can demonstrate leadership, social skills, business skills etc. Did your fraternity have a philanthropy? that counts as community service which always looks good. One of the guys in my fraternity applied to med school last cycle and is going to attend Stanford in the fall. What did he write about in his personal statement? How being a member of his fraternity prepared him for a life in medicine. Trust me, being in a fraternity shows a strong commitment, the kind needed to become a dentist, just make sure you emphasize to the admissions committee the positives of being in a fraternity and i guarantee it will help you land a spot.

i put it in my ECs. I couldn't find room for it in my personal statement as other aspects of my life took priority, but I listed all of my positions and it was a lot of total hours. I think it is a huge plus, and I hope I will be able to include it in some secondaries.

I'd totally put it.

Just watch how you word it...you don't want to seem like the type that movies like to stereotype. Use your best judgement and make sure it's not the only thing you talk about in your interviews.

Good luck.

my sorority was kind of my life in college... when I commit to something I REALLY commit... i was social chair and VP/Administration... I participated in all of our philanthropies as well as the frats', and danced for greek week/homecoming/everything that involved skits. I was one the girls you expected to show up to EVERYTHING... b.c. of that I haven't really been involved in other organizations (other than GAMMA... greeks advocating mature management of alcohol).

I have a feeling this will work against me... any suggestions on how to make it seem like I am actually well rounded, and involved on my campus? My extracurriculars seems almost non existent since all I have to write down is my sorority, and there isn't much room to explain I was really involved....

btw... i don't want to "seem" well rounded, because I happen to think I am. my other stuff includes:
shadowed 50 hrs ob/gyn, shadowed 50 hrs PT, volunteer PT dept at hospital (100 hrs) and currently shadowing dentist (40+ hrs)... summer office job, and I work as a promoter for bands...

not much, but something? right? i hope :-\

Unless your frat was Alpha Sigma Puke.

Yes, it is worth putting on the app

"Is it worth putting down that you were in a frat on the application?"

only if you're planning to put circle jerking, mickey slipping and beer die in the manual dexterity section. 😀

honestly, i can't think of any reason not to put it. i would assume that the schools won't stereotype you negatively as long as you worked hard enough to get decent stats. if anything, i agree that it shows some well-roundedness.

Don't forget the elephant walk as a demonstration of being a team player.

I was in a fraternity and we got kicked off campus spring of my Freshman year for reasins that I'm sure that would not be looked highly upon by any dental school. I wasn't any major part in this but I want to show dental schools that I did something my freshman year but I also don't want them to think I'm a trouble maker or something...You think I should put the fraternity on my application?

What dental school is going to have the time to look up your frat to know it was kicked off campus?

I think putting that wouldn't hurt you but it probably wouldn't help you much. It's more like a space-filler. I'd rather try to fill that space with something more thoughtful.

saying you belong to a frat/sor is inconsequential IF you have excellent everything else. But if you have average scores, then there are certain assumptions that you may have concentrated more on the party side of a frat as oppose to the community sevice/activity/academics side of a frat.

Lot of my classmates belong to a frat/sor in college and they're awesome. But it should NOT, by any means be the highlight of your college CV.

i don't know...dentists love to drink. maybe they will want to admit you into the class so they can party with you.

thats true and so do i...but would you really want to put "drinking games extraordinaire" in your resume?

If one of the people that is reading you application was part of you fraternity when they were in college that could certainly help you out. I am not saying that you will get in because of that but it could only help. Also, most people know that being in a fraternity/ sorority take a lot of time and commitment. They will recognize that if nothing else.
