Freaking Out

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You'll be fine. Some things I'd keep in mind.

1. Don't make **** up. Like if you didn't examine something, just say you didn't and that you will go do it now.
2. Show up early and stay late (within work hours of course). Nothing like the rotation I just finished where the intern came walking in a 7am (on the first day) and I had already written notes on >half the patients.
3. Be reliable. If someone tells you to do something, be sure as hell it gets done. Write things down so you don't forget.
4. Be efficient. From the very beginning, always think about ways to make yourself more efficient.

I'm going to read up on management of common conditions like hypertension, asthma, COPD, etc, and I really need to go over antibiotic coverage. I'm trying to avoid looking like an idiot on my first few days. Any other suggestions?

No. You WILL look like an idiot the first few days. That's what this is all about. Everyone does. It's drinking from the fire hose. It's natural to be nervous, to feel inadequate and borderline incompetent. What you are all feeling right now you are SUPPOSED to feel. Accept it and move through it, and then when the fire passes over you, you will realize that you remain . . . stronger for the experience . . . I'm excited for you guys. It's going to be an awesome year.

Talking to a couple of residents about intern year today and one put it like this: "Look, if you weren't nervous, unsure, or scared, then I would be concerned. Over-confidence as an intern equals serious potential for error. Now go leave this hospital and drink a beer."

Drinking a beer is one thing I definitely know how to do. Now becoming a competent intern, well...I think I'm just going to have take my trial-by-fire like a man.

Sounds like quality advice. Liver rounds are important part of your time between now and then.

I'll toast to that, dude!

Um... are we supposed to be freaking out?

I'm so calm right now about being an intern in 2 months that it's almost kinda eerie. Sure, I've forgotten tons of things. I'll get it back.
