I can't sugar coat this. The answer is no. We're really hard on thieves. You will need years of exemplary service and work in positions of trust to show that the you of now is not the you of then. I'd like to hear what my learned colleagues gyngyn and LizzyM have to say on this.

Just Kidding. About the cookie part. I am desperate for advice. Have 3.8+GPA, 40+ MCAT, at Hypsm. I know I have a good application in this regard. BUT.... I have an IA and expunged misdem. for petty theft when I was a freshman (took some books from campus bookstore). Made a stupid mistake and thoroughly learned my lesson. Will adcoms be able to overlook this?

My school doesn't pre-screen and based upon history, you'd likely get an II, and then the AdCom will reject your or low-wait list you.

Other schools that do pre-screen would likely reject you out of hand.

@Goro Thankyou for the honest reply. So how does that work..will schools like yours that will not look past it reject before secondaries? I'd like to apply very very broadly and see which schools are more forgiving and will look past stupid mistakes. Also I understand legally that this will not really affect medical licensing so its more so up to the discretion of the school right?

At my school you won't make it past the screener. Maybe someplace else.

If you are going to apply, give yourself the best chance possible. That means -

1. Apply in the last cycle for which your remarkable MCAT will still be valid.
2. In the meantime, turn yourself into the nearest USA equivalent to Mother Theresa that you can (ie working for peanuts on behalf of the most deprived and difficult population you can find).
3. If 1 and 2 don't work, carry on 2 for a few more years, retake the MCAT to similar effect, and try again.

I'm sorry to hear this from @gyngyn. I read your post about dismissed convictions, and after reading this, I'm a bit worried. I do have a dismissed conviction, and it is for petty theft. I already have a conditional acceptance. Do you think it will be overturned? Would love to hear your input. LizzyM thought it would be fine.

A dismissed charge will not harm you.
Convictions are another matter.

What do you mean by IA?

I thought expunged meant it wasn't on your record anymore?

That's what I thought as well...from my understanding, expunged is better than dismissed.

That being said, was bass convicted then expunged? I guess that may seem worse.
