Psych is something I'm very interested in, so I applied to work as a psychiatric aide this summer and made it to the interview. Due to the month long training period, they require you to be able to work 24 hours a week for a full year (not possible in my case as I go to school out of state). The nurse seemed like she really wanted to hire me, but couldn't because of that. Since this is an experience I really want, I went to their volunteer coordinator and offered to undergo the training and work for no pay. Unfortunately, no one's ever wanted to do that before, so the CEO has to be contacted, and prospects don't look good.

Free labor, damnit! 😡Liability😡

wow that does kind of suck.

but to be realistic, companies and organizations want to know that their investment in individuals will be worth the return. Most hospitals have a one year or 100 hour commitment for their volunteers, and the one-month training period seems to be a really long time.

Would you be willing to work for future summers? they might be more willing to take you then..

Yeah, I've told the volunteer coordinator I'd definitely be willing to come in over Christmas/Thanksgiving/etc, and likely the following summer as well. It's a state run hospital, which I think is why it's so much of a problem.
