so i was reading up on FAP and who qualifies...and i read that if you are approved that not only do you get 14 free applications/secondaries but you also get free MCAT prep material. So for those of you who have recieved FAP approval, was this the case for you?

You don't get free MCAT prep material.. well at least I did not.

If you are approved for FAP before you register for the MCAT, then you are supposed to recieve study materials. So people who were awarded FAP after they registered didn't get the extra prep materials and such.

All you get is the official MCAT study guide book if you sign up for FAP before registering for the MCAT.

You also get free access to the online MSAR for one year, but you don't receive any notification of it... Or at least I didn't...

i just want to confirm the requirements for eligibility: i am not a dependent of my parents anymore so I will be paying for med school apps by myself. i make about 30K but they won't consider me eligible b/c they still add your parents income in right? (even if you say you're not a dependent?)

correct

When I received the FAP, I think I remember reading something about MCAT materials. By that point, however, I had already taken the MCAT. But the free application to 14 schools was pretty ballin'. Most schools honor the FAP for secondaries as well.

for schools to honor the FAP for secondaries, do we have to contact each school individually, or would they automatically know we are on the program? do we get waivers at some point to send to the schools? thanks!

I didn't either 🙁

i got a notification. it was an email with this link, http://www.aamc.org/MSAR, and telling me to sign in with my aamc login.

That link doesn't do anything for me...when I login and try to get to the MSAR it asks me for an access code...which I have no idea about.

Yay, I'm so excited about this!

Ooh, good question. Maybe there's information sent from AMCAS that automatically informs them? Or a check box and we have to send in supporting information or something?

If only i didnt have two doctors as parents

I now know why I didn't receive any notification. If you ever applied and were approved for the fee assistance program before, you don't receive the MCAT essentials book or online MSAR access again. I hope that helps anybody out there.

Is the online access limited to one year? I was approved for FAP before the new MSAR came out, so I got the MSAR book and MCAT essentials.

Also, nearly every school will waive the secondary fee. I've e-mailed about 20 so far, and doubt that there are many that don't honor the waiver. Most of them said to contact the office when submitting the secondary application to arrange the waiver.

Lol, you'd rather grow up broke?

Wow, I am so glad to know that most schools will waive the secondary fee. I'm still waiting to hear back yea or nay on my FAP (just submitted the docs a few days ago) but my family income is well below the cutoff so I'm not too concerned. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to afford the secondary fees, because I'll be applying to the max of 14 free schools. Such a relief!

I don't know why, but I was so nervous about waiting for the results, even though I KNEW I qualified. I guess we're all so neurotic we even worry about sure things. lol

So should I just email all the schools before I submit them? I don't have telephone access...

I was nervous about that two, because the only way I have a shot of applying anywhere was to get FAP. And now that I know secondary fees could be waived, it makes me much more relieved. Its all a matter about doing well on the MCAT now.

Okay now you're making me nervous! Haha. I do wish I'd submitted FAP earlier, because I am worried that 15 business days will go by and they'll tell me they need more supporting documentation, and then I'll have to wait another three weeks to submit AMCAS. I'm just itching to get it finished so I can start thinking about secondaries.

Having gone through a cycle with FAP, all but one of the schools I applied to (U of Maryland I believe) honored the waiver for waiving the secondary fee (=1000s saved).

I'd say about half automatically waived your fee, with the other half needing you to forward your acceptance email as proof. So don't wait until you're ready to submit your secondary to figure this out, find out right away (most schools say what to do in the secondary or accompanying emails).

I believe if you're asked for supplemental materials it means you're approved and they just need to make sure you were accurate. I don't think they ask for that info for those who wouldn't qualify based on provided numbers. So if you just submitted and are curious about the status, that's a lead for you... :luck::luck::luck:

In my experience the supporting documentation wasn't the limiting step. i.e. took two weeks to approve FAP and 2 days after documentation - with the documentation being the last step before approval. I applied during peak processing times of May.

FWIW, I believe they ask for supporting documentation from EVERYONE who will be approved, it isn't a random audit.

If you are approved for the FAP and want to apply to more than 14 schools, I know the first 14 primaries are covered and you have to pay for the remaining primaries out of your own pocket. My question is, will all the secondaries be waived or will only 14 of the secondaries be waived?

All secondaries are waived, as the schools themselves manage payment of secondaries, this isn't something AMCAS does. This means there is no way to track how many you've done for purposes of the waivers, and schools only know which other schools you applied to if you tell them.

Did you apply to Georgetown? If so, do you know what they mean when they say,
" if your AMCAS fee waiver appears on your verified AMCAS application, we will grant a waiver of the secondary application fee. "

Was I supposed to write about my fap approval on AMCAS?, or does amcas let them know about the approval when the primary is transmitted?

Thanks. 🙂

No I didn't. AMCAS lets schools know if you're approved, you don't need to include this in your primary (i.e. there isn't a checkbox or an area to indicate this). However, I don't know if AMCAS only lets a school know this if by their initial transmission to the school you had already received FAP approval or if as soon as you're approved it sends it out to all schools you've applied to. Basically they're saying that they'll waive the fee automatically, but the best thing to do would be to call the admissions office, briefly explain your question, and ask if they see that you have FAP. Admissions will always be the best resource for questions like that, and really the only one you should trust. Plus it'll get your name in their minds 🙂.
