I'm curious...

While in dental school
, (excluding necessary time for studying, driving/walking/biking, sleeping, eating), how much free time do you usually have?

And if you are currently running a dental office, how much free time do you usually have and what's your daily actual schedule of activities like...if you don't mind sharing. (i'd imagine 8 hours of work, pick up kids, do billings, dinner, 1 hr of R&R and sleep...and repeat?)
Thanks...

I can't answer regarding a dental student, but I can for a practicing dentist. Most general dentists work 4 days a week or at least work less than 40 hrs/week. Once you have an established practice, there isn't that much you have to deal with outside of work hours (on a regular basis). So I'm not sure what you mean by billings. You have office managers/receptionists that handle all of that. So if you work 8-5 m-th the rest of the time is all yours. (Aside from the occasional meeting or CE) This is part of the appeal of this field over other health related careers.

As a dental student, normal study-at-home nights involve being at school until the afternoon (anywhere from 2-6..it changes from year to year), relax at home for an hour, cook and eat dinner with the boyfriend, study for 2-3 hours, maybe grab some Netflix before bed, then bed. However, on the weekends I still only study max. 3 hours a day, so I have almost all of Saturday and Sunday to play. And usually there is one night a week I don't study at all (I have chorus rehearsal once a week, but even if I don't I still might take a night off.) It depends on how many and which exams are coming up. And hell no am I going to study for all of Friday night either 😉 😉 (Given, this is efficient studying...I can't sit in the library for 10 hours with AIM open and hope to get anything done...I put in earplugs and go solidly for 2 hours)

And in practice, dentists usually work 25-35 hours, from what I've seen. New dentist moms may just work 15! So there is lots of free time then.

Lets see..I got 8-4 classes everyday...by the time I reach home, shower, eat , check email, it's about 6 ish...watch a little tv...study a 2-3 hours. and then SLEEPP.

Friday night/saturday (whole day) is to relax...sometimes I take sundays off too.

maybe my school's just kind of insane or i dont' catch on to work very well. 😛

i have class like 8-4, stay after school for project until 7 (most nights), walk home, eat dinner, shower, etc. bam it's like 9. phone with boyfriend for an hour. study until 12, then crash. usually study and work on projects most of the weekend days too.

i think my school loads on the work. 😛

nah the last two posters are nutz... if you wanna do well in school you have to least study for 2-3 hours after school, and do at least 2 hours of projects per night... weekend is about at least 10 hours of studyin?? this mostly when exams are coming up.. which in my case seems like every week!

Well, I'm no gunner, so I don't study as much as some. I'm not making straight As, but I'm getting by just fine 🙂
I am in class from 8 to any time from 2-5. Then I get home, relax for a while and study for a few hours if a test is coming up. If not (which granted, the times when there isn't a test coming up are few and far between lately) I just chill all evening.

lol. i don't think i'm too nuts. 😛 my school just decided to put a bunch of the hard classes all the same semester. so we have like 3 quizzes a week, 2 projects and 1-2 exams. so usually all of the studying on the weekend is to catch up on studying for an upcoming exam....

last semester was cake. lots of relaxing time and tons of time to sleep. 😴

guess we're just making up for it this semester.

Does anybody know how many hours a week OMFS work?
