I would like to study Family Health and then work in NYC or in New Orleans when I am finished with Medical School. I've heard of programs that if you work in some areas of New Orleans or NYC, they pay for medical school.
Is it hard to be accepted to one of these programs? and where can I find more information?

Thank You!!

I believe you are thinking of the NHSC program? http://nhsc.bhpr.hrsa.gov/members/loan_repayors/

From what I have heard you don't always get the location that you want (lottery system?) and if needed they can move you to where they need you. Basically it is like working for the military, they own you for the amount of time that they will be paying back your loans. For some people this is great and works out. For others it is more difficult with families.

You might want to contact the NHSC directly. As an entering med-student I can't answer that question. Unless someone on the forum has gone through the program, most of what you will hear will be what others have heard. Just contact the source directly.

It's pretty competitive. I almost got my application in this year but missed the deadline by a day or something ridiculous. You want to make sure you read the fine print VERY carefully. It's a massive committment!

Dont bother, its not worth it. Many underserved areas will pay off a certain portion of your medical school debt if you agree to work in the area for a certain number of years. This does not limit you to primary care and allows you to choose where you want to live. The health service core is a nice idea but why lock yourself into something 7 or so years before you have to do it. Your life can change alot.

This is some great advice worth considering. 👍
