I was hoping someone can help me decode the Radiation Oncology Freida listings...I am starting to gather a list of programs I wish to apply to this year. I searched ERAS programs on Freida, but was dismayed at the number of programs that appear not to be accepting applicants this fall. Only 31 programs list the answer "Yes" in the column "Accepting applications for 2005-06." Harvard, North Carolina, Mayo, Wisconsin, almost all the Pennsylvania programs, among many others all respond "No." I emailed North Carolina (where I am scheduled for a visiting rotation) and was told this means they will not be interviewing students this winter. Does this mean that all these great programs won't be offering interviews this year?

Thanks for the help,
Casey

Ultimately contacting the program is the only reliable source. UNC usually has a 2-0-1-1 cycle with two this year. That means none next year. DO NOT USE FRIEDA AS YOUR DEFINATIVE SOURCE. It would be highly ununual for the other programs you mentioned not to be accepting applicants. If you are going to be a forth year you will want to inquire at the programs for 2007 spots, as you will have to complete a prelim year (ie transition, prelim med, prelim surg, or in some specific cases, an integrated internship)

I would think twice (at least) before rotating through UNC this fall (unless you are a UNC student). They will not be interviewing as they have no open spots for those starting radonc in july 2007. Unless you've heard something else from the program contact that is. There are 2 of us starting in 2006, one in 2005, and one started in 2004. As of now, they will next have an incoming spot for 2008. Although I guess there is always a possibility of this changing as the program evolves.

I imagine the other programs just have their info out of date.

Actually, I think it says that because the programs actually start a year later, after your PGY1 year. The ones that say they are offering a spot for the first year are programs where you do your PGY1 year at their program. That's how I interpreted it anyway.

Actually, things don't look very promising out west, either. Davis is only accepting 1 (vs. 2 last year), UCLA/UCI are not accepting applicants whatsoever (they usually accept 2-3)... I recently became interested in Rad Onc, but now I'm second guessing myself. Seems to be the wrong year to apply. If anybody has any further information about the number of programs accepting/not accepting, it would be appreciated.

This is a sense of confusion with all advanced positions. You are interested in PGY-2 positions for june 2007. If you call all the institutions and explained you are interested in positions at that time, I am sure the answer will be something different. Also beware of the accuracy of anything on Frieda - Warning #2. Good luck.

Actually, just to clarify: the information about Cali programs that I mentioned did come straight from the contacts listed on Freida or on program websites and, yes, I did ask about PGY-2 positions starting 2007.

I spoke (*twice*) with the people at the Colorado radonc, and they said they will not have any PGY-2 spots for 2007. Also, UC Irvine says on their website that you are welcome to rotate there, but they will not have any PGY-2 spots in 2007.

I, too, am a little confused by the Freida information and think it's easier just to go to the source and check the website/call the program.
