Well, it was one of those pop quizzes. The reason I failed is because I hadnt received my bio textbook until today. I tried so hard to study from the lectures but to no avail. Do you think I can still get an A in the class? 80% of the grade comes from 4 exams and 20% comes from assignments and quizzes. The prof doesnt drop lowest quiz score. She's one those new profs. Or if worst comes to worst, lets assume I get a B. Will that look bad? I feel stupid because it makes sense to fail a really hard quiz, but this was one those "if-you-read-the-book-then-you-got-an-A" type of quizzes. I just got my book. I will be intensely reviewing the first 2 chapters. Also, any tips on how to succeed in Bio 101?

Just chill. You have four years ahead of you, and you'll be fine.

You may as well just drop out of college and put in an application at Taco Bell. There's no way out from here. Sorry dude. 🙁

Hey! Don't be mean!

You should be fine. If it's only 20% of your grade with many more quizzes to come, I'm sure you can still get an A. And B's will not kill you. Don't worry about it. Like disorder said, you have 4 years ahead of you. You can't freak out over every quiz and grade.

you are definitely definitely not screwed. Take a deep breath. If you are this upset over a quiz, you'll internally combust sometime in the next 4 yrs.

I second putting in an application to Taco Bell. Your professor will tell all of your future professors and even the medical school admissions committees what a terrible student you are.

Not intending to be mean. But unless you are only getting one quiz and one assignment to make up that 20%, chances are you'll still be able to get an A. Plus, even if somehow you got an A- or even (God forbid) a B+, you'd still be in the running for medical school.

The difficulty level of the material wasn't the issue here since you didn't have the book, so it's understandable that you wouldn't do well. And obviously you'll be much better prepared next time.

I third putting in the application to taco bell. Man that is just plain bad and as someone said, med school adcoms will see you as a terrible student. Abandon all hope of becoming a doctor because even a B in bio 101 will screw you over completely and utterly. Switch majors and consider another profession, I hear business is quite profitable. Don't worry, not everyone gets to do what they want to in life and thats just the way it is. It doesnt matter how hard you work and study, you will never be able to make up for doing bad on this quiz even if the prof did drop the lowest quiz score

Chilax man, its one quiz. If you continue like this you will be a nut case by the time you are done with undergrad. its ooooook.

I don't know how your bio class is, but I was able to study just the lecture slides to succeed in my bio class. After you get a feel for what the professor expects, form a study habit. I think the most generic advice is to read the textbook before your lecture, make sure you understand everything while she is lecturing, and then review the concepts over the weekend.

If you want to do well in any science/math class... DO PRACTICE PROBLEMS!

Whoa there sport...relax...and this is coming from an extremely neurotic pre-med...getting a B is not the worst thing in the world, but seriously, only 20% of your grade comes from HW/Quizzes...chances are this quiz was worth 1-2% of your final grade...so sorry, you can't get the 99 anymore, but a 90+ is definitely attainable...and new teachers are either great or terrible...my 1 C/1 C+ both came from teachers who were brand new or were just promoted and given free reign...just make sure to get into a good study routine...read the chapter before class, then she'll go over it once in class, and you can review 1 more time before the test...that way you'll have seen the material 3 times before taking the test...good luck, calm down, don't let one bad grade spill over into the other classes..

Chill, or I swear you will contemplate either murder, suicide or both later on. If you're stressing out like this now, you really need to put this in perspective before it kills you.

study a lot more, college can be MUCH more work than high school, depending on where you went to high school. I have failed my share of non-dropable quiz and still did fine in the class. Just use it as motivation, figure out where the material on the quiz was coming from that you didn't study, and study the heck out of it.

I can guarantee that in a couple years, you're going to think back to this incident and laugh hysterically

change your major to agricultural journalism. Impossible to fail quizzes there.

I'd be more worried about learning to manage stress 😛.

If you failed BIO 101 completely I would be worried though :scared:

I doubt that will happen.

or.... the OP will be flipping burgers at BK wondering what happened.🙁

Chill. One quiz means nothing.

Figure out what you did wrong and fix it. (If you didn't study enough, study more next time..etc.)

I agree with others, you will lose your damn mind if you don't calm down. I know freshman year I was a lot more high stress than I am now, but this is just one quiz. Really though, think about how much a little quiz actually means to your grade. If you have a 15 week semester and one quiz per week, then even getting a zero on a quiz won't kill your quiz score. Then consider the fact that your quiz score only account for 20% of your grade. Even though it seems your low score is the result of not having your book, learn from this situation and do everything you can to avoid ever taking tests or quizzes when you are unprepared.

I heard BK is hiring too... You should look into that.

you can probably use this experience for the inevitable "overcoming adversity" essays

Does anyone else notice how utterly predictable this thread is?

A freshman posts with a neurotic question, clearly taking an adverse incident and totally blowing it out of proportion.

Then a series of posts appear in two distinct groups. One set reassures lovingly tells him to chill, the other ridicules for being so crazy uptight.

why do i even read these threads? Oh yeah, I'm avoiding writing my secondaries.

You left out the person who pops in to say how predictable the thread is. 😎

Relax. Seriously. It doesn't matter. No, really, it doesn't. Learn from it and move on. On a scale of 1 to important, this is a zero.

you mean, the failed quiz won't go on my transcript??? The guys that decide whether if we can goto a medical school won't be able to see it in our application? What if they ask me "Have you failed a biology quiz in your freshman year" ?

Relax, you will be fine. 👍 Like the others said, it will only count for a total of like 2% of your grade, so just do well on the rest of the class. I failed two quizzes in Bio last semester (granted the quizzes were totally irrelevant to the study materials *grumbles*) and hardly showed up for class and still got an A.
Not that I advise skipping, but if you do not learn to chillax a bit now, you will die before you even finish off the semester and then you will be working at Taco Bell. Or in a looney bin.

I had to come in and say LOL, and i thought predents were bad

Yeah man you will be fine. I actually think that I'm in you class, you go to Loyola right? Because, the very same thing also happened to me on Friday. If so, the quiz was really only one question and I really am having a hard time believing it will have any impact on our grade in the class. I mean it might just be EC or something.

As for advice for doing well remember pre-med is a marathon not a sprint, pace yourself.

You are definitely not doomed! It is still very possible to get an A. It doesn't sound the the quiz is a very big percentage of your grade at all. I got a bad grade on a microbiology pop quiz and still had such a high A that could have gotten a 0 on the final and STILL gotten an A. Just start studying when you get your book and you will be fine.

wait is this thread a joke ?

That quiz is probably worth about 1% of your final grade.

chill. You'll do well.

Relax…It all comes down to Natural Selection.

"Rule #76: No excuses, play like a champion"
All kidding aside though, don't worry about it. Life is like this. You aren't ALWAYS going to do well or ALWAYS do poorly. The law of averages is applicable to life also. I got two C's my freshman year in important classes. I have worked so that my GPA is now up to a good level. You are MUCH worse off if you freak out about little things than just do what you can to correct them. It sounds like you had a reasonable excuse, so just let it go. Just bust your rear end for the next few quizes and do well on future quizes....Seriously, if you worry all the time, you aren't going to enjoy college. Take school seriously, but it really isn't life or death, trust me.

Good luck to you in the future!
