Hello guys, hoping to receive some helpful input on my situation.

Here is my 1st semester schedule for college-

General Chemistry
Intro to Microeconomics
Precalculus
Intro to Health Career
Freshman Orientation
Total credit hours: 14

My counselor said it would not be a good idea to take on another class, but many people on SDN say they wish they would've taken Chem and Bio I&II their freshman years. Now to be honest my day is already quite full with classes, and in order to take Freshman Biology I would have to take the lab as a night class (gets out at 9:30 and I have classes as early as 8:30 A.M.). This could potentially take out an important gap of time for studying.

My other option is to take Bio II as a summer course, but I am not familiar with the difficulty or layout of this class and with the faster pace of summer classes this may not be a good idea.

ANY opinions or advice is really appreciated! Thanks for the help!

This.

I would say to stick with your current schedule. Why overwhelm yourself the first semester of your first year? Believe me, you're going to have plenty of time to do that in future semesters. Also, as far as Bio II goes, I would just take it in the Summer; all it really is is memorization.

Thank you! I appreciate the advice. I'll stick with what I have.

Would a course like Physics I be better suited for summer? And then I could take Bio II 1st semester of my sophomore year.

I apologize if I'm being OCD about this.

I'm taking organic chemistry and bio my sophomore year, physics during the summer.
So, sure, that's a viable option.

Hmm...I haven't taken the Physics sequence yet, but from what I've read, it's more conceptual than just memorization. It could be difficult if you get behind because as you may have guessed, Summer courses move quite rapidly. If you're confident in your own abilities and feel you could do well in it regardless of when it's taken, then I say go for it in the Summer. However, if you're like me and need a little more time for the material to sink in, then take it during a regular semester. Good luck!

The only way I would consider squeezing in Bio would be to drop Micro. If you're going for a Economics/Business degree, this would be a horrible idea, however. Far better to take it a bit slow your first semester/year and scramble a bit over the summer/later years than to overload yourself out of the gate and then spend the rest of college trying to play catch up rather than just maintainance. The first year of college holds a lot of changes: being away from home, old friends and everything familiar (for the first time for many people), learning to take care of yourself (in the sense of laundry, meals, shopping, budgets, bills) and the adjustment between high school academics where most everything is spoon fed to students to college level where the amount of effort the average teacher will put into an individual student is directly related to the amount of effort that student is willing to demonstrate. Add to all of that the allure of being able to party pretty much anytime you don't have the willpower to say no and you can see where having a manageable class schedule can be vital.

yea man it's good to get bio and chem out of the way in the beginning so you can continue with the the following semester.

Why is this even a thread? That is a standard schedule. It will just come down to whether or not you can handle the work. You'll be fine. Stop worrying : )

I'd stick with your schedule as it is. I wouldn't worry about taking gen chem and bio at the same time. you can always start bio in the spring if you want to and it won't put you behind at all. no need to overwhelm yourself your first semester before you make you get adjusted to college life. work hard, learn how to study effectively, and most of all make sure you have some fun!

THE TRUTH

And FYI listen to your advisor. They kinda sorta deal with this stuff on a daily basis AKA they know their ****.

Drop intro to health career (lol?)

add biology

I would ditch one of the fluff classes and add Bio 1. I know you said that you'd have to stay late for lab, but unless the lecture and lab are strict co-requisites at your school, nothing says that you need to take the lab just yet. I took my Bio 1 lab after I was done with Bio 2.

I know people here will tell you that you have plenty of time to do your prereqs, but personally [and perhaps irrationally] I would feel behind if I didn't finish my intro bio and chem by the end of freshman year.

Exactly.
