  1. Pre-Veterinary
My GPA for my first semester was a 3.3. I got 3 As, a C and a B+.
I know some will say this is too early to be worrying and that I have plenty of time to improve my grades in the future, but I've never wanted to do anything besides go to veterinary school and I'm worried that this could affect me in the future. People always say "well if you get As in the rest of your classes, you'll GPA will be..." but I see that as completely unrealistic to get all As for the rest of my classes. Grades are important but so is my sanity.
I know the GPAs they tell you are averages but I was just hoping that this 3.3 won't affect me in the future.

Are you going to let it affect your future?

Realistically a 3.3 isn't awful for your first semester in college or for your second, third, etc. Hell, it's not even "bad" if you graduate undergrad with a 3.3 GPA.
I did.

Not sure what you want. Will a 3.3 impact your chances? Sure. It's not a 4.0 so yes, it will diminish your chances. But it isn't a 2.8, either, and it isn't much below the average at many (most?) schools, so it isn't like you can't get in with a 3.3.

I mean, you pretty much implied you don't want to do better, so what's the point in worrying about how it will impact your chances?

For me, it really depends on which class you got the C in. The A's and B+ are great.

I also know at my school that the lower level majors biology and chemistry courses are "weed outs," meaning they are really challenging for incoming freshman to do well in. They are trying to weed out some of the people that don't have the right drive. You do have plenty of chances to make this right by doing well in other classes.

You can always use this semester as motivation to do better. And a 3.3 really isn't bad. I know plenty of students who got 2.5-2.7 their first semester and spent the rest of their academic careers getting A's and B's only to raise it to a 3.5 or so. You'll be fine.

You have to tell yourself you can improve. If you don't do that, you create a self-fulfilling prophecy where you will fail no matter what. I finished my freshman year of college with 2.8 cumulative. I didn't know what I could do except push myself further than I ever could before. I'll graduate with a 3.5 in the spring. Did I make a few B's here and there? Yes, that's life. But I've been invited to interview at two great vet schools. My GPA was 3.4 when I applied. 3.3 is almost a B+ average, it's not a death sentence. You also need to keep in mind GPA isn't everything. There's vet experience that you NEED to even probably get an interview anywhere, GRE, and there's science and last 45 credits that they also look at. if all you want to do is get to vet school, you have to start with telling yourself you can make it. If not, you won't. Simple as that.
